Barbara Walters will get the scoop on Oprah Winfrey’s new- est step in her career -- her own network, the Oprah Winfrey Net- work (OWN) -- just weeks before its January debut. Many months ago Discovery announced plans to change the Discovery Health Channel to OWN, but changed its scheduled launch from 2009 to 2011. The special will explore the past 25 years of Winfrey’s contri- bution to the entertainment in- dustry with her award-winning talk show “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” which has been the high- est-rated talk show in American television history. Through the camera lens, she has been able to lead America through her philanthropic ef- forts, which mostly have focused on poverty and women’s issues. Since the beginning of Win- frey’s career, Walters has sat down with her at each step in her escalating success, and this List,” a project through her show and website, Oprah.com, to track down child molesters. Winfrey has also co-founded the women’s cable television network Oxygen, and is the pres- ident of Harpo Productions (Oprah spelled backwards). She was nominated for an Academy Award for her portrayal of Sofia in Steven Spielberg’s “The Color Purple,” and publishes two mag- azines, “O, the Oprah Magazine” (on whose cover she appears each month) and “O at Home.” Although Walters and Winfrey Oprah Winfrey sits down with Barbara Walters this week interview will mark a special checkpoint for both of them. To highlight just how far Winfrey has come since the debut of her talk show, Walters will be show- ing highlights from the genre- defining daytime show’s 25-year run. The final episode of “Oprah” will air in September 2011. Her story is a pretty classic, American, rags-to-riches tale. After its rising popularity, the program was syndicated, re- named to “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” given a full hour, and eventually changed from its orig- inal concept -- a racy, tabloid talk show -- to a program emphasiz- ing spirituality, literature and health. In so doing, many say she revolutionized the entire talk- show genre. Winfrey was a mil- lionaire before she hit 35. Some speculate the paradigm shift came in 1986, when Win- frey revealed to her viewers that she had been molested and sex- ually assaulted as a child by sev- eral members of her family; the audience saw a deeply personal and open side of Winfrey, a per- sonality trait for which she would be so well known in the future. Obama will bring a great deal of wisdom and political insight to the table -- she’s become the most watched first lady in de- cades, and with the mid-term elections now over, surely Ameri- ca is interested in how the past year has been for her.
