2B – Daily News – Thursday, December 2, 2010 FEATURES Parents’ perpetual patronage perturbing Dear Annie: For my entire life, my parents have favored my younger sister, ‘‘Erin,’’ their only biological child. (My older brother and I are adopted.) When I turned 16, my parents told me to get a job. When Erin turned 16, they paid for every- thing. Erin is now in col- lege and engaged to a guy my parents adore. I dropped out of college, have a job and am engaged to a guy my par- ents hate. When I first started dating ‘‘Dwayne,’’ he had a conflict with my par- ents, and I took his side. They kicked me out, so I moved in with him. The conflict has been resolved, but my parents won’t forgive me for liv- ing ‘‘in sin.’’ Dwayne recently lost his job. His parents are helping us with rent, but my parents refuse any 12 24 TEN10 Annie’s Mailbox by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar assistance, saying they do not sup- port our living together. But apparently it’s OK for Erin and her fiancee to live with my parents. I am told they have separate bed- rooms, but my parents spend a lot of time out of town, so who are they fooling? I am devastated that my parents only care about a piece of paper. They would rather I live on the street than with Dwayne. My fiance says I should cut off contact because it’s obvious they don’t care about me. Should I? Should I invite them to the wedding? — Devastated and Hurt in Idaho Dear Devastated: We worry about a fiance who gets into a major conflict with your parents and encourages you to cut off contact with your family. He may think he is being supportive, but he will not help you reconcile. Please invite your parents to the wedding. They are enti- tled to their views on cohabitation and may relax once things are legal. As for their favoritism, this is some- thing you should discuss with them, preferably with a neutral third party who can make them understand how unfair and hurtful it is. Dear Annie: My hus- band and I have been together for 18 years. He has two married children and four grandchildren. I have one married daugh- ter and two grandchildren. My husband is plan- ning to take his children and grandkids to Disney World next year and wants me to come, but refuses to include my daughter and her family. He says he can’t take everyone. I told him to go without me. I cannot tell my daugh- ter and grandkids that we are taking his family and not mine. She would be so hurt. What do you think? ‘Tis the Season Food Drive! Your husband cannot be expected to pay for more people than he can afford. If you have money of your own, con- tribute toward your daughter’s share. If it’s the size of the crowd, perhaps your husband would be willing to do a second trip another time. Although, frankly, it’s less expensive to do it all at once. And you can all wear matching T-shirts so you are easier to spot. Dear Annie: Your reply to ‘‘Mike in Alaba- ma’’ was lame. He was the 26-year-old who woke up while being pawed at by his 45-year-old neigh- bor on a fishing trip. He asked how to handle it due to his wife’s friendship with the neighbor’s wife, ‘‘Sophie.’’ You said to pretend it never happened and gradually pull away. Why in the world should Mike ever be sub- jected to the lecherous creep next door? He should avoid him like the plague and, if Sophie questions it, tell her to ask her husband. — Indiana Common Sense Dear Indiana: We treated this as we would a man who made a pass at his neighbor’s wife: Polite- ly keep your distance, and let him know that if it hap- pens again, you’ll inform his spouse. We weren’t suggesting that Mike con- tinue to socialize with the neighbors, only that he not make it more difficult for his wife, who wishes to maintain a friendship with Sophie. Super Glue to the rescue? DEAR DR. GOTT: I have heard that sur- geons are using Super Glue to close wounds in the operating room. Is this true? If it is, could I use it to close painful cracks in my heels and hands? DEAR READ- possible tool to fight this chronic infection? Dr. Peter Gott ER: This is a common practice that has been used for a number of years; however, the prod- uct is not Super Glue. DermaBond contains a variety of components found in Super Glue and is approved for medical use. This clear epoxy resin sets in about three minutes and lasts up to 10 days. It cannot take the place of sutures or staples in all cases and its uses are relatively restricted. Complicated closures still require tra- ditional stitches. Der- maBond is noninvasive, painless, will not leave a scar, minimizes the risk of infection, and doesn’t require a follow-up visit to a doctor for suture removal. I think some- times we are in some- thing resembling a time warp, because surgeons now use surgical paste, sealants made from human blood proteins and fibrin bandages. Aren’t research and necessity phenomenal? Home-use tissue-adhe- sive products are avail- able but should only be used on small lacerations once all contamination has been removed from a wound to prevent infec- tion. I urge anyone with an open wound to consult a physician before taking matters (or glues) into their own hands. DEAR DR. GOTT: I’ve had a sinus infection for the past eight years. I’ve had two unsuccess- ful sinus operations. I use a nasal steroid twice a day and a saline solution wash up my nose every day. I’ve had numerous antibiotics and still have the infection. I quit alco- hol because my sinuses became more inflamed and swollen after drink- ing. A medical profes- sional recently told me that the alcohol causes a rise of white blood cells into the infected sinuses, and that is what causes the uncomfortable inflammation. If white blood cells fight infec- tion, should I drink some liquor moderately as a DEAR READ- ER: Alcohol pre- vents nutrients from feeding the immune system. Once in the blood, it will reduce the num- ber and impair the function of the white blood cells (WBC) in the body. The lower the white-blood- cell count, the more diffi- cult it becomes to fight off disease. Low white blood counts can occur with acute bacterial or viral infection, in cases of pernicious anemia, acute lymphoblastic leukemia, hormonal imbalances and alco- holism. Given the fact that alcohol decreases WBC, it would be futile for you to ingest any amount of alcohol in an attempt to raise your count and fight the sinusitis. Because of the dura- tion of your illness, you should be under the care of an ear-nose-and-throat (ENT) specialist who can determine whether it is caused by tooth infection, allergies, nasal polyps, a deviated septum or other medical condition. Per- haps you are unknowing- ly exposed to pollutants, such as tobacco smoke, cleaning solvents or chemical fumes. If neces- sary, imaging studies such as CT or MRI might be appropriate. You might undergo allergy testing or nasal endoscopy. Get to the bottom of the problem.
