2A – Daily News – Wednesday, December 1, 2010 Community people&events Homes of Hope Be sad, but not defeated The holidays are a time of mixed emotions. On one hand you have the excitement of family and friends coming together to celebrate the season. You have family tradi- tions and the hope that the New Year brings. On the other hand, in this economy with lost homes, lost jobs and lost hopes, it can be difficult to embrace the reason for the season. The season that is supposed to signify joy, peace and all the trap- pings of Christmas becomes scary and depressing trying to make it all happen with limited time and income. Courtesy photo Carol Brandt Homes of Hope for Victims In Domestic Abuse held their third annual dinner on Nov. 12 at the Red Bluff Com- munity and Senior Center. During a tri-tip dinner prepared by John Hake, facts about domestic abuse were read and the silent auction table was open for bidding. Eva DeLaRosa, Job Corp director for California South- ern Baptists, from El Monte, a victim of child abuse herself, was the main speaker. CJ Dewitt and Kimberly Kennedy shared personal stories of overcoming abuse. The purpose of Homes of Hope is to provide long term housing, job training, and mentoring for victims. Clyde and Carol Brandt of Cottonwood took on the endeavor after see- ing a lack of service in this area. “We are working with Alternatives to Violence to pro- vide longer term assistance than they are able provide,” says Brandt. “We now have enough funds to be able to help a family for two years with rent assistance, but our goal is to have permanent housing available.” Homes of Hope for Victims in Domestic Abuse is a non- profit faith based organization that is funded through dona- tions. A support group for victims has recently been formed and meets regularly. For more information call 347-1330 or visit www.homesofhopeforvida.org. Makes sense, but that doesn’t have to be you. You do not have to take sadness over the edge to defeat. Faydra Rector You Matter I’m going to tell you something that no commercial will tell you, no Hallmark card will express and no one who’s grass seems greener will admit. It is OK to be sad. It is, just don’t become defeated. Sadness is a natural human emo- tion. All people feel sadness from time to time. It is healthy to mourn the loss of your financial stability, your job, your home or your dis- placed family, especially this time Sadness can be a won- derful catalyst to develop important character traits. You can turn sadness into courage. Courage is taking action in spite of fear. You can turn sadness into deter- mination. If you know like you know like you know that you want more than you have, you can make changes in your life. No one can tell you it is over until you concede. You decide when the end is here. If you look, you can find people who will tell you that your dreams are too big, your ability too small. You can find people who will knock you down, laugh at you and never believe in you. You can also find people who dream just as big as you do. People who will help you develop your abilities so you can achieve anything. You can find people with their hands reaching down to help you up and laugh with you instead of at you. Spend your time looking for them. No matter who you are, there are pos- itive people ready, willing and able to meet you where you are: sad, lonely and scared about tomorrow. Many of those people have their own stories of sadness and loss. Their stories will inspire you. Give you hope and a path to follow or help you blaze your own trail. Sadness is an appropriate feeling and an appropriate response to life’s setbacks. A good cry is often the best way to purge out the negativity that has settled in. Get it out, cry, but never become defeated. Remember, everything in life just "is" until you attach meaning to it. Nothing is good or bad until you label it so.
