1B Sports Corning blows Masterful out Yreka 49-6 Tuesday November 5, 2013 showing By ANDRE BYIK DN Staff Writer CORNING — Corning High's football team this season has left little doubt that it would bounce back from a disappointing 2012 campaign, which saw it miss the playoffs. Against the Yreka Miners (5-4, 1-3 Northern Athletic) on Friday the Cards (7-2, 3-1 NAL) got off to a slower than usual start during their 49-6 blowout win at Corning High School. Corning traded scoreless possessions with Yreka until an Aiden Nye interception late in the first period led to 60-yard rushing touchdown by Alex Davila, who would thrill the Senior Night crowd again in the second with a 97-yard rushing touchdown. On six carries Davila notched 176 rushing yards on the night. The Cards enjoyed 100-yard rushing games from Chance Nelson (119) and Joe Aguirre (106) as well. Nelson finished with a touchdown of his own, an 11yard run late in the third. And Aguirre put the finishing touches on Corning's highest scoring game of the year with an 81-yard rushing touchdown with 9.9 seconds left in the game. Thomas Lowe flirted with the century mark as he finished with 96-yards rushing, which included a 65yard touchdown that saw the 6-foot-0, 230-pound senior outrun the Miners down the right sideline in the first period. The Miners could do little against the Cards' defensive line throughout the night, finally scoring on a 1yard keeper from quarterback Gabe Durney late in the third quarter after Durney completed a 53-yard pass to get to the Cards' 10-yard line. The Cards gained rushing touchdowns from seniors David Edson and Chayce Maday as well. Maday capped a nine-play drive with a 3-yard keeper early in the third. And Edson ran in a 6-yard touchdown, capping a 15-play drive late in the fourth. Corning closes its season on the road Friday against the top-seeded West Valley Eagles (8-1, 4-0 NAL). By RICH GREENE DN Staff Writer When it comes to Red Bluff Spartans swimming the name Julia Brandt is one that's going to be around for awhile — and not just because the freshman has three more years left in front of her. Brandt stuck her name in the high school's all-time record book three times at Saturday's NSCIF Masters Championship setting school records in the 100-yard butterfly, 100-yard breaststroke and as part of the 200yard freestyle relay team. Despite the school records, Brandt finished second in both individual events. Pleasant Valley's Kimberly Harbert clipped her 59.86 seconds to 1:01.34 in the butterfly and Chico's Cydni Aird turned in a time of 1:08.12 in the breaststroke to Brandt's 1:13.02. Those swimmers helped lead their schools to the top of the girls standings as Pleasant Valley and Chico tied with 327 points each. University Prep was third with 200 points. Red Bluff finished in seventh with 144 points. Mercy was 17th with 28 points.
