4B – Daily News – Saturday, November 27, 2010 Religion Faith&Worship Church news Taize worship service offered during advent St. Peter’s Episcopal Church will host Ecumenical (Interdenominational) Taizé Worship Services every Sunday evening during Advent beginning Nov. 28. Taizé services will begin at 7 p.m. bringing together prayer, meditative music and silence in uniting Christians to pre- pare for the coming of the birth of Christ. Taizé worship combines meditative prayer, readings of the Psalms and Scripture, simple repetitive songs, a time of silence, and prayers. The reading of the Psalms places all believers in a sense of communion together. Reading of the Scripture allows worshippers to discover God’s heart through His word. Silence allows believers to quietly listen for God’s message. Prayer provides an opportunity for praise and thanksgiving, as well as a time to share sorrows and joys with God. Throughout the ser- vice, contemplative songs nourish the worshipper. All are welcome to participate in Advent Taizé Ser- vices at St. Peter’s, located at 510 Jefferson Street (on the corner of Jefferson and Elm Streets). For more worship service information please contact St. Peter’s at 527- 5205 or via email at stpeters@sbcglobal.net. More infor- mation about Taizé is available at www.taize.fr. Grace PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH 5 p.m. Sundays at Antelope School, 22630 Antelope Blvd. Red Bluff Info. 530-227-3630, Pastor David Stark Biblical, Calvinistic, Evangelistic Westminster Confession of 1648 Engagement trumps disengagement I received a mass e-mail recently from a friend. It presents a decided- ly right wing point of view as it claims a simple solution to fixing our national congress by adopting a new federal statute. The eight points that encompass "all we have to do" include imposing term limits, no retirement or post-service stipends, mandatory participation in social security, prohibiting members from raising their own pay, mandatory participation in the regular medical care system, no exemptions from federal law, and the voiding of all past and present contracts with con- gressmen. These "reforms" would certainly "cut congress members down to size" but they in no way address or articulate the economic, social, and even spiritual issues that so divide the nation at this time. They disengage us further from our leaders by simply punishing them for not doing what we want without accepting any responsibility for working with them as participants in the citizenship process. They com- plain that leaders disregard our con- stitution while themselves display- ing ignorance of its provisions. Reality is that to cancel contracts, impose term limits, and strip con- gress of authority to set congres- sional pay scales requires amending that constitution over which they claim guardianship. They don’t know this because they decline to put in the effort to engage the con- stitution and know it. While the right wing proposal is laughable the left wing action being challenged by Pacific Justice Insti- tute is a serious threat to our civil liberties. The University of Califor- nia system is denying credit to grad- uates of Christian schools for the courses they took in biology, histo- ry, and literature – three examples – because by permitting respect for God’s action in these fields of disci- pline they are indicted as "too nar- row-minded." The UC system is requiring higher test scores from these grads to gain admission – as blatant a violation of the 14th Amendment to the Con- stitution as I have ever witnessed. What we have here is a politically correct university system and a court willing to play along with a blatant refusal to grant equal access and engagement in the public square to people simply because they profess and practice faith. We can argue these matters out, but the left leaning court and Cali- fornia systems would simply forbid one side to speak in any meaningful way. century thereafter, coupled with a justifiable pride in our heritage as the last best hope for a free humankind, that led to victory in the Cold War – birthed by right leaning people. Reality is that all sides have much to learn from each other. That learning James Wilson GodTalk One of the least desirable fea- tures of a post-modern world view is that we tend to believe only what our friends believe and demonize anyone who thinks otherwise. It is the tendency to put heads in the sand rather than listen to an unfa- miliar voice that got us into trouble in the Garden of Eden when we preferred eating fruit to dialogue with God. It is the same disen- gagement that leads us to betray ourselves and one another today. Ironically, the other side of the post-modern coin is a thirst for re- discovery of the paths that led us to where we are today. It was a re- discovery of this nation’s dream of equality for all that led to the Civil Rights Revolution – birthed by left leaning people in the fifties and sixties. It was a re-discovery of the spirit that led us to throw off for- eign domination in the eighteenth century, and foreign threat in every only becomes possible when none are permitted to bully the other and when all commit to engaging with the other in respectful albeit passionate dialogue. That means if you are con- servative and think the country leans too far left come out from behind sim- plistic e-mails and widescreen TV and get involved in real conversa- tion and participation. If you are liberal and think yourself better than the Neanderthals who don’t see it as you do, get over yourselves and recognize that faith- based thought is the primary shaper of this nation – engage with the people who think other than you do and give them credit for walking upright before you argue your point. We might find that we need one another and that we are better off for it. We might even find our- selves carrying out the Biblical mandate of 2 Corinthians 5:16-20. We would certainly be on the road to living in a 1 Corinthians 12 world – in which all parts of the Body are honored and put to their highest and best use for the good of all – as God intends for all. James A. Wilson is the author of Living As Ambassadors of Relationships and The Holy Spirit and the End Times – available at local bookstores or by e-mailing him at praynorthstate@charter.net. Voices of faith: When is it a miracle and when is it a coincidence? (MCT) CAUSE OR EFFECT? The Rev. Duke Tufty, Unity Temple on the Plaza, Kansas City, Mo.: Where miracles are often construed as some magical, super natural event, I believe they are simply happenings that we presently don't have the intelligence, logic or understanding to explain. For instance, I wake up in the morning thinking about a good friend of mine that I hadn't seen or heard from for 20 years. I go into deep meditation, thinking of my friend and send out thoughts for him to contact me. Later that day I get a telephone call from my friend. That is a miracle, yet it is the result of some principle of telepathic transference I don't understand. In other words, it was caused by something. A coincidence, on the other hand, is the concurrence of an event that had no intention, design or premeditation ini- tiating it. For instance, I wake up in the morning thinking about a good friend of mine that I hadn't seen or heard from for 20 years. Later that day I pull up to a stop light look over at the car next to me and there is my long-lost friend. Quite simply, what we call a miracle has a cause that is beyond our understanding. A coincidence is a ran- dom circumstance without an intentional cause. Tehama County Church Directory HOYT-COLE CHAPEL OF THE FLOWERS 816 Walnut St. - Red Bluff Red Bluff....
