Move the clock Corbett, Elliott show the power of small towns By Dee Underwood TV Media Marks family decided to change that, and celebrated Halloween in August and Christmas in No- vember. Airing Sunday,Nov.28,on F CBS,“November Christmas” tells the story of 23-year-old cancer survivor Vanessa Marks as she relives the year her par- ents moved up the holidays so she could celebrate with them. The newest offering from the prolific Hallmark Hall of Fame, the feature corralled many big- name stars, including John Cor- bett,Karen Allen,Sam Elliott and Sarah Paulson. Eight-year-old Vanessa, played by Emily Alyn Lind, spends long stretches in the hospital to get her cancer treat- ments.Unsure of how much longer his daughter will live, Vanessa’s father Tom (John Corbett) “moves the clock” so she can have a few more childhood mem- ories. Tom and his wife Beth (Sarah Paul- son) ap- proach their neighbor Jess San- ford (Sam El- liott) for a pumpkin to carve. A few days later, Jess learns about Vanessa’s illness and real- izes what Tom’s trying to do. Jess decides to mend some fences with an old friend to get the pumpkins and help Tom cre- ate an early Halloween for his daughter, and the Marks family wakes up to a large pile of pumpkins the next morning. “My fami- ly in this sto- ry doesn’t need money, but we do need emotional support from our neighbors,”said Cor- bett.“If there’s a message in this story, I think it’s (to) look out for your neighbors, open your eyes and ears a little bit, and see if you can lend a help- ing hand.” Before long,Vanessa is bro- ken-hearted to learn that she will have to spend Christmas in the hospital, so Jess and his wife Claire (Karen Allen) get the town together to give the sick child a Christmas she’ll never forget — in November. The screenplay was adapted from a five-page short story written by Greg Cop- pa,who wanted to illuminate the power of community.Cop- pa himself grew up in a small town and wanted to show the world how tight-knit a community can be.P’Nenah Goldstein was behind the tran- sition from short story to fea- ture film, and her experience writing the earlier Hallmark Hall of Fame special “Loving Leah” helped her do it. “November Christmas”is set in a small fictional town in Rhode Island, where Coppa grew up,but it was actually filmed in and around Halifax, Nova Scotia. Corbett is probably best known as Aidan Shaw in the HBO series “Sex and the City,” but he says he prefers to stick to the more family-friendly movies because of his small-town up- bringing. “I like that aspect of the sto- ry,”he said in an on-set inter- view,“where the community gets together to help a family in need. I grew up in the small town of Wheeling,W.Va.,and I’ve seen what community can do.” Corbett has also starred in Karen Allen and Sam Elliott star in “November Christmas” family films such as “My Big Fat Greek Wedding,”“Raising He- len,”“Raise Your Voice”and “Serendipity.”He has recently reappeared on the small screen in the Showtime series “United States of Tara.” His co-star Elliott is no Payroll Processing • Direct Deposit • Free Delivery • Professional, Yet Competitively Priced Lucks & Weaver 2 x 3” Please Visit One Of Our Convenient Locations: 157 S. Elliott was hesitant to take the role in “November Christ- mas”because he was taking care of his 94-year-old mother, but he says the heartwarming concept of the film, and his mother’s insistence, made him reconsider. Emily Alyn Lind gives a mov- ing performance as Vanessa, but her acting resume is full of much bleaker roles. Lind starred on the ABC soap opera “All My Children”as Annie and Ryan’s daughter Emma, who was in- volved in both kidnapping and blackmail schemes this year alone. She has also had small roles in the action series “Flash- point”and “Criminal Minds.” 2 The Goshen News • Viewer’s Choice • Saturday, November 27, 2010 - Friday, December 3, 2010 LLateaughs Conan: Conan O’Brien People asked me why I named my show “Conan”— I did it so I would be harder to replace. It’s not easy doing a late-night show on a channel without a lot of money that viewers have trouble finding. That’s why I left NBC. Former president George W. Bush was on “Oprah.” When asked about being the leader of the free world, Oprah said: “It’s not bad!” Apple just launched its online store in China. Apple said this is an exciting opportunity to sell iPods to the kids who make them. The Tonight Show: Jay Leno President Obama is in India. You know what they say: go where the jobs are. Nancy Pelosi says she will seek to become the House minority leader.Who better to be the minority leader than the person who led their party to become the minority? MSNBC news anchor Keith Olbermann will be back to work on Wednesday after being suspended without pay for giving campaign contributions to Democratic candidates, which is against the rules at MSNBC. See, if only he had done like Eliot Spitzer and given his money to hookers, he would have gotten his own prime-time show on CNN. President Obama was in India yesterday visiting our jobs. Tomorrow he goes to China to visit our money. The Late Show: David Letterman There’re marathons all over the world and there are some unique features about the New York City marathon. For example, when they shoot off the starter’s gun, they throw it into the river. How about that guy that they pulled out of the mine in Chile, Edison Pena, who ran in the marathon? Isn’t that tremendous? He had to be rescued from a pothole on 92nd Street. Tiki Tan 2 x 1”
