‘Strange’ but true Bob Saget returns to television By Kyla Brewer TV Media derstood. Some are all three. Such is the case with Bob Saget, a dichotomy of comedy. Millions know him as the S longtime host of ABC’s “Ameri- ca’s Funniest Home Videos” (from 1989 to 1997) and the star of the family comedy “Full House”(1987-1995). For those fans,Saget was as straitlaced as they come. But others familiar with his standup stylings know a differ- ent side of the performer, one with a lot more chutzpah and a lot less innocence. The comedy Saget performs on tour and in comedy clubs is often contro- versial,off-color and even of- fensive. As someone who walks the line between the mainstream and the avant-garde,he’s just the man to introduce average TV viewers to people with un- usual lifestyles. At least, that’s what A&E is banking on as the network launches “Strange Days With Bob Saget”on Tues- day,Nov.30. The six-part,half-hour series follows Saget as he travels around America, spending time ome comedians are loved, some are loathed and others are just misun- within some fascinating subcul- tures. As he explores unusual corners of society,he attempts to break down the barriers of acceptance and reveal the truth about such offbeat people. “I’ve always been interested in the underbelly of anything,” said Saget,“but what I truly en- joy is diving beneath the surface of a subculture that may appear to be one thing, but ends up be- ing something completely unex- pected.” His adventures begin as he rides shotgun (actually in a sidecar) with a group of hard- core bikers. His trek takes him from Kentucky to Florida with the Iron Order Motorcycle Club, who invite him along for a wed- ding,a memorial service and more than one wild party. The fun continues with a trip to the Pacific Northwest to tag along with the Bigfoot Field Re- search Organization on a hunt. Saget also attempts to fit in with a group of professional wrestlers, rushes a fraternity at Cornell University and acts as a camp counselor at sleepover camp for 11-to-14-year-old kids. In addition, three very dif- ferent groups attempt to show him the true Las Vegas. “Strange Days With Bob Saget”promises to cover a lot of unconventional ground, but Stutzman MOTOR SALES , INC. 06 Chevrolet Impala LS 4 dr., loaded, p. seat, tilt, cruise, CD, silver, 48,000 mi. 06 Saturn Ion2 4 dr., loaded, 4 cyl., A/C, tilt, CD, silver, 44,000 mi. 06 Saturn Ion2 Coupe loaded, 4 cyl., 5 spd., p. sunroof, alum. wheels, silver, 52,000 mi. Bob Saget hosts A&E’s new reality series “Strange Days With Bob Saget” A&E has faith.Shortly after the network greenlit the series in November 2009,executive Robert Sharenow explained he had high hopes for the show, saying the real-life Saget was “even funnier and more relat- able when just being himself than any other role he’s ever played.” It makes sense in a weird sort of way that Saget might be able to bridge the gap between these countercultures and mainstream America.Seen as the fresh-faced “AFV”host and loving father Danny Tanner from “Full House,”millions con- sider him trustworthy. But his reputation as a bad-boy come- dian provides him with an in for the bikers, sasquatch hunters and the like. A&E has gained a reputation for portraying such offbeat characters to great success, so “Strange Days With Bob Saget” could be a good fit for the for- mer “Arts and Entertainment” network. Larger-than-life boun- ty hunter Duane (Dog) Chap- man has been a staple on the channel for years in “Dog the Bounty Hunter.”The network also has a newer hit with Billy Bretherton and his family-run pest control business in “Billy the Exterminator.” Action star Steven Seagal and beloved television actor Tony Danza have also thrown their hats into the reality ring for A&E.Seagal tries to prove he has the mettle to compete with his on-screen counterparts as he battles real crime in Jefferson Parish, La.,as a reserve deputy sheriff in “Steven Seagal Law- man.”In “Teach:Tony Danza,” the former star of “Taxi”and “Who’s the Boss”nobly tackles the role of a high school English teacher at a large urban high school in Philadelphia. In fact,he has experi- enced a bit of a career renais- sance since landing a gig as the uncredited narrator of CBS’s hit comedy “How I Met Your Moth- er,”which debuted in 2005.He wrote, directed and starred in “Farce of the Penguins”(2006), a parody of the smash-hit docu- mentary “March of the Pen- guins”(2005).
