1B Sports Missed chances doom Red Bluff Spartans Tuesday October 29, 2013 Cards win Homecoming By RICH GREENE DN Staff Writer A scoreless second half led to a disappointing end to Senior Night Friday and maybe more importantly a loss of the firm grip the Red Bluff Spartans would have had on a playoff berth. Visiting Pleasant Valley brought with them a loud group of traveling supporters, overcame a second half deficit and knocked off Red Bluff 35-28. For the Spartans it was a second half of missed opportunities. After an up-and-down first two quarters that saw the Spartans take a 28-21 lead into the locker room, Red Bluff would get just three possessions in the final half. The first came somewhat unexpectedly when Garrett Ward kicked what was somewhat between an onside and pooch kick. The Spartans jumped on the loose ball and were seemingly in business to take a commanding lead. But that momentum didn't last long after advancing the ball to the Vikings 28, Red Bluff got called for an illegal snap, after snapping too early following an official's timeout to measure for a first down. That was followed up by a Pleasant Valley sack of Greg Dufour and a delay of game penalty as the Spartans found themselves going backwards. Red Bluff ended up punting and the Vikings took advantage marching down the field. Trent Darms found Trey Rosenbalm from 5 yards out for the duo's second touchdown hookup of the game. However with a chance to tie, Pleasant Valley's kick sailed wide and Red Bluff was still up 28-27. The Spartans responded with a strong drive and faced third-and-six at the Pleasant Valley 21. Christian Shaffer took the handoff on a draw and reached what would have been a Spartans first down, but ended up losing the ball in the process. The Vikings then strung together a 14-play, 86-yard drive capped by a 2-yard Houston McGown score, which proved to be the game winner. The Spartans only got one more possession, receiving the ball with 6 minutes remaining. But they only mustered one first down, punted away with 4 minutes and never got the ball back as Pleasant Valley milked out the clock with runs by Dylan Batie and Ryan Steindorf. Red Bluff fell to 5-3 with the loss, Pleasant Valley improved to 4-4. Spartans coach Corey Hein said after the game that his team needs to find that edge to take advantage and finish opportunities that are given to them. He said it was another example of his team not being able to string four quarters together, but told his kids not to quit on each other with two games left in the season. Red Bluff travels to a Paradise team that doesn't appear as strong as recent Bobcats team next week. But it'll also be a Paradise team wanting to revenge Red Bluff's upset over the then No. 1 Bobcats. The Spartans close at Foothill. A win in either likely secures a playoff berth. Red Bluff opened up Friday's game strong behind the running of Shaffer setting up a pair of touchdown passes from Dufour to Walker Dodero. Dufour threw a third touchdown pass to Aaron Lyon from 19 yards out. Shaffer also added his own score and finished with 91 yards on 20 carries. Dufour went 7-for-18 for 137 yards, but completed just one pass in the second half, a 13-yarder to Wyatt Clement. Joseph Bosetti continued to make impressive catches, he came down with two balls for 38 yards. Austin Torres had one catch for 33 yards. Daniel Koenig rushed five times for 16 yards. Lyon carried once for 10. Dufour rushed five times for nine yards. The Vikings were led by their quarterback Darms, who wasn't always accurate but showed a great mix of poise and athleticism to keep plays alive. Perhaps no play did he show that more than a 44-yard touchdown hookup with Rosenbalm. Darms finished 13-for22 for 214 yards and three touchdowns. The third touchdown was to Chad Olsen. Darms also scored with his legs, rushing for a team high 57 yards on 10 carries. NSCIF Football Playoff Points Playoff points through Week 8. Top 6 qualify in Division 1. Top 8 in other divisions. By ANDRE BYIK 8. DN Staff Writer CORNING — Corning High School's football team bounced back Friday in front of 50-year Golden Grads from the class of 1963. The Cardinals in their homecoming game defeated the lowly Anderson Cubs, 42-7 a week after a disappointing turn at Central Valley. The win, which was never in doubt after the Cards took advantage of two early Anderson (1-7, 0-3 Northern Athletic League) turnovers for two scores, keeps Corning on track for a playoff berth after missing the postseason last year. In the first released Northern Section CIF playoff points the Cards (6-2, 2-1 NAL) are sitting in the No. 5 spot, which would pit it against No. 2 Sutter (6-2, 4-0 Butte View) if the Division II playoffs started today. Corning should at least split the last two games of its season; a home game against No. 8 Yreka (5-3, 1-2 NAL) on Friday and a difficult road game at No. 1 West Valley (7-1, 3-0 NAL) on Nov. Corning's lopsided win against Anderson delighted a packed and vocal home crowd that dwarfed the Cubs faithful across the field. Anderson fumbled on its first possession, and Corning took quick advantage. With good field possession quarterback Chayce Maday capped a six-play drive by punching in a four-yard touchdown to give the Cards an early advantage. On Anderson's subsequent possession it fumbled again, leading to a 16yard touchdown run by Chance Nelson, who finished the game with 94 rushing yards on nine carries. The only blemish to the Cards' fast start were the three offensive penalties it earned. Anderson's turnover woes, however, would continue through the night as Corning made the end zone its home. On Corning's first possession in the second period Maday dashed along the right sideline for a 68-yard touchdown that would lead to a 21-0 advantage for the boys in black and red. Maday fin- ished with two touchdowns with 81 rushing yards on five carries. The Cards' would make way for the homecoming coronation ceremonies at halftime with a 35-0 lead after Anthony Peter picked up an Anderson fumble for a score and Alex Davila ran in a 70-yard touchdown. Davila finished with 95 yards on six carries. After homecoming queen Rachel Silva was crowned and the traditional kisses were smacked, Corning kept its scoring load relatively light to end the game as Tony Carillo ran in the Cards' final touchdown, an 8-yard carry with 4:45 left in the third that led to a 42-0 advantage. Carillo had 49 yards on 11 carries. Corning kicker Jayve Uriostegui was a perfect six of six on extra point attempts. Anderson did notch a moral victory by not being shut out. With 5:21 left to play the Cubs' Eryk Wehunt eluded the Cards' defense as he ran for an 80-yard touchdown. Corning High's Aiden Nye notched 40 yards on five carries, and David Edson had 25 yards on five carries. PREP ROUNDUP FIELD HOCKEY Eastern Athletic League Postseason Tournament The Lady Cardinals took second place at the EAL's postseason tournament over the weekend. Jessica Beckley, Kaitlyn Huntley, Bailey Jennings and Rachel Silva were named to the All-Tournament team. Corning went 4-2 at the tournament. Chico shut out Corning 1-0. Jennings and Ashlee Mishoe scored in a 2-1 win over Pleasant Valley. The Cardinals won an emotional game 2-1 over Chico. Following 50 minutes of 9-on-9 play and 10 additional minutes of 7on-7 play the game went to flicks. Huntley blocked 14 strokes, which allowed Kobye Rezendes to score in the 14th round with a low shot to the right corner. Jennings scored in regulation. Davis shut out Corning 6-0.
