Tehama County Sheriff's deputies responded about 8 p.m. to Marisposa Avenue in Gerber for a report of a robbery, according to a department press release. Through an interpreter a 27year-old man reported two men had come to the front door of his residence asking for assistance. The men then forced their way into the home and produced handguns. One man struck the 27-yearold in the head. He was then tied up with duct tape. The men then demanded money and took the victim's wallet containing $100 as well as two cell phones and vehicle keys. The suspects started making holes in the walls as though they were looking for something that might have been hid- Fiddle finals den. While they were doing that, the victim got free and ran to a neighbor's house to call law enforcement. See HOME, page 5A Sex offender check nets three A compliance check of registered sex offenders within Tehama County Sunday led to the felony arrests of three individuals as well as four children being taken into protective custody. The Tehama County Sheriff's Department and Red Bluff Police conducted the county-wide compliance check for the purpose of verifying registration requirements, according to a department press release. Three children were taken into protective custody who were living with Steven Willet at 1240 Franzel Road in Red Bluff. Willet was arrested for being a felon in possession of a firearm. Another verification check led law enforcement to find a registered sex offender had been living with an orphaned 11-year-old boy. The Western Open Fiddle Championships were a hit Friday and Saturday, with more fiddlers in attendance and a larger audience than the 2012 event, according to organizers. Competitors came from Nevada, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Minnesota, and from the length of California. Judges came from Oregon, Washington and Edmonton, Alberta Canada. Hughie Smith, Bakersfield See FIDDLE, page 5A DN Staff Writer The Tehama County Board of Supervisors will consider today whether or not to extend Public Antone Works Director Gary Antone's contract for another four years when it meets 10 a.m. at 727 Oak St. Antone's contract as Road Commissioner and Public Works Director is set to expire Oct. 31. He has served in that role since November 2005. Prior to that he was the city of Red Bluff's Public Works Director from 1993-2005. The 4-year contract extension sets Antone's salary at $10,488 per month for the first year of the contract, a 1 percent increase from his current s a l a r y . Antone's salary will rise to $10,593 per month during the second through fourth years. If the county agrees to salary increases for all Tehama County Management Employees' Association represented employees, Antone's salary would be increased equally. The contract includes a department head stipend of $100 per month, $45 per month deferred compensation matching deposit, 32 hours of management time off per fiscal year, one personal holiday per year as well as See CONTRACT, page 5A Silva named Corning homecoming queen Weekend sees string of burglaries A Tehama County Sheriff''s K-9 unit assisted with the apprehension of a 29-year-old Los Molinos man, who was hiding inside a home that was the site of a reported burglary in process Friday afternoon. Tehama County Sheriff's deputies and California Highway Patrol officers responded to a residence on the 8800 block of State Route 99E around 1:45 p.m., according to a department press release. According to sheriff's logs the homeowner's niece was driving by the location when she noticed a purple PT Cruiser she had never seen before. Upon arrival law enforcement contacted several people inside and outside the residence and 7 5 8 5 5 1 6 9 0 0 1 9 learned a man was hiding inside a locked bedroom. Deputies located Billy Wayne Carpenter hiding inside the bathroom vanity. According to the release, Carpenter ignored lawful orders from the deputies and refused to come out. A K-9 unit was deployed into the room where Carpenter was hiding. Following a brief struggle with deputies and the K-9, Carpenter was taken into custody. Deputies located 1.2 grams of methamphetamine and 25 prescription tables on Carpenter. He also had $250,000 in outstanding arrest warrants. Carpenter was charged with felony possession of a controlled substance, possession of prescription narcotics and resisting with use of force.
