With snow on the ground in Dorris, the Warriors trailed 24-0 at halftime, but like their season, their defense stepped up in the second half. Mercy scored the first three touch- downs of the second half to close the score to 24-22, but couldn’t get any closer. “It came down to the wire,” Mercy coach Paul Vietti said. Royce Crane scored two touch- downs and quarterback Mitchell Lopez added the Warriors other score. Butte Valley moves on to Wednes- day’s D-VI championship. FOOTBALL “It was an incredible year,” Vietti said. “I wish we would have been able to figure it out earlier.” Mercy’s defense went from averag- ing 56.5 points per game during the early part of their first year of 8-man football to just 24 per game over their last three contests. Behind Lopez and Crane the Mercy ground game was a force all year. Vietti said the improvement came from getting healthy and a switch to a more aggressive approach. Kings snap losing streak Golden State’s rally falls short New Jersey 81 Kings 86 SACRAMENTO (AP) — Tyreke Evans scored 20 points and the Sacramento Kings snapped a six-game losing streak by beating the New Jersey Nets 86-81 on Friday night. Struggling in the early season, the youthful Kings also ended a five-game skid at home, avoiding their first 0-6 stretch at Arco Arena since an eight-game slide from Nov. 11 to Dec. 6, 2008. Kris Humphries had 18 points and 10 rebounds, Anthony Morrow scored 17 points and Travis Outlaw 13 for the Nets. New Jersey lost its second straight and has dropped eight of 10 since starting the season 2-0 for the first time tine in eight seasons. Carl Landry scored 15 points, Beno Udrih had 12 and Luther Head added 10 for Sacramento. DeMarcus Cousins had eight points and 10 rebounds for the Kings, who lost at New Jer- sey the second game of the season. Landry broke a tie with a bucket in the lane and Donte Greene followed with a steal and dribbled the length of the court for a dunk, bring- ing the crowd to its feet for one of the few times and giving the Kings an 80-76 lead with 3:16 left. Outlaw made a jumper following a timeout to cut the Kings’ lead to 83-81 with 27 seconds remaining. But with the shot clock run- ning down, Udrih made a 3- pointer to make it 86-81 with 3.4 seconds left. Evans began the game shooting 1 of 8, then got going late in the first half, surprisingly making shots from the perimeter, where he has struggled throughout his brief NBA career. Evans helped put the Kings on top 64-63 heading into the fourth quarter. Last year’s Rookie of the Year scored nine points in the third, when Sacramento outscored the Nets 21-17. Morrow and Humphries both had 12 points in the opening half to put the Nets in front 46-43. New Jersey used a 19-4 run in the sec- ond quarter to erase an eight-point deficit. Landry had 10 points for the Kings. Notes: Greene, who played just four minutes in a recent four-game stretch, got his first start of the season. It was the fifth different starting lineup for the Kings. In the battle of two highly touted rookie post players, Cousins drew an offensive foul late in the first quarter against Derrick Favors.Neither player was a factor. Favors scored three points. ... Nets reserve Quinton Ross suffered a calf strain in the first half and didn’t return. ...Devin Harris missed seven of eight shots before hitting a jumper midway through the third quarter, then was promptly taken out of the game. New York 125 Warriors 119 OAKLAND (AP) — Raymond Felton scored a career-high 35 points on 13- of-17 shooting and dished out 11 assists, and the New York Knicks held off Gold- en State’s late rally to beat the Warriors 125-119 on Fri- day night and snap an eight- game losing streak in Oak- land. Amare Stoudemire made a driving layin with 2:42 left and finished with 26 points and 11 rebounds. Danilo Gallinari added 23 points and knocked down a key 3- pointer with 1:25 left as New York handed the War- riors their first home loss of the season and ended a four- game skid in the series over- all. Monta Ellis scored 40 points for his sixth career 40-point game and Stephen Curry had 29 points, eight assists and five rebounds for the Warriors. Golden State won its first five games at Oracle Arena under first- year coach Keith Smart, the team’s best home start since going 6-0 to begin the 1990- 91 season. Reggie Williams hit two key 3-pointers that pulled the Warriors within 104-100 with 6:47 to play and scored all but two of his 18 points in the final period. But the Knicks, who led by as many as 18 before let- ting Golden State get within two late, made the clutch plays down the stretch. War- riors power forward David Lee watched this one from the bench in street clothes. He attended the game against his former team one day after being released from a hospital following a second procedure on his left See SHORT, page 2B Red Bluff hosts volleyball championships VOLLEYBALL By RICHGREENE DN Sports Editor While the local teams have all been eliminated, there’s still volleyball to be played in Tehama County this weekend, as all five Northern Section champi- onships will take place Sat- urday at Red Bluff Union High School.
