Canadian cousins come calling What a wonderful visit we had with Canadian cousins, John and Phyllis Miller. Having come to Tehama County in previous years they decided to repeat the visit. A few years back Phyllis and John arrived at the Barber family reunion held at Camp Tehama, they arrived on motorcycles. Were they ever wonderful, providing fun filled moments, visiting, joking and eating with us. The Millers now travel in a super duper motor home arranged with all the amenities of a fantastic home on wheels. It was very hard to say goodbye without suggesting that they come again to this part of California. They suggested that we should consider visiting them in Laduc, Alberta, Canada. We certainly will give that some serious thought as the Millers are such wonder family connec- tions. John is the son of Inga Paulson Miller who was the sister of my hus- band’s mother Gunil Paulson Bar- ber. The two sisters were of Norwe- gian background, two of the six children born to Ole and Runghild (Rosie) Larson Rudi Paulson. A genealogy of Hurley’s family com- piled from 1590-1975. called Enderud, (Norwegian for the end of the road) has been published with a picture of the original home of his Norwegian ancestors still standing, located in the Denali Valley in Nor- way, brings our family to a wonder- ful historical journey. This visit with relatives led me to re-read the Enderud Genealogy Family Book. How very exciting to read tidbits of the lives of long ago relatives, the challenges they faced in preserving their homes and fields. What determination people had before they had mechanical machines to plow the fields and build their houses. Many were challenges they had as they strove to keep their children safe and healthy. How for- tunate many of us are, although we work hard, are far better off with the tools we have today to repair and build our abodes and prop- erty. We are often so busy taking on many tasks that we may forget how rewarding it is to stop and share experiences with family members. The renewal of our spirits as we share stories and recipes, sadness and happiness is worth its weight in gold. Visits to Canada are wonderful, those visits we have previously made to our Canadian relatives is at the top of our list of special places and special people. The cooks resid- ing in Canada are fantastic. They produce the most envied of scrump- tious dishes; people stand in line for their recipes. Our recent privilege of talking with Canadian cousins brought us reminders of our family compiled recipes in "Paulson’s Best Recipes." We had the privilege of sampling a couple of these ever to be remembered delicacies. The fol- lowing recipe contributed by the John Miller Family Favorites is as follows: Carmel Corn 2 cups popcorn, 4 cups brown sugar 3 cups butter 1 cup corn syrup Vanilla Maple flavoring Nuts, optional Carolyn Barber 2 cups unpopped corn. This fills a large bread pan. Pop corn. Remove unpopped ker- nels. In large saucepan combine 4 cups lightly packed brown sugar, 3 cups butter or margarine and 1 _ cups corn syrup. Stir contin- ually until sauce reaches 240 degree F, no higher or it will caramelize. Remove from heat immediately. Add vanilla, maple or rum flavoring and nuts. Mix in bread pan. Spread on table to cool and dry. Store in plastic bags in the fridge or freezer. Believe me, the finished product is melt in your mouth good, good, and good! Now that I have my mouth watering I will rush to the kitchen to check and see if I have the ingredients needed for the recipe. With holidays on the way I believe Carmel Corn may be in pop- ular demand. Thanks Canadian Cousins for bringing your fantastic food and your great hospitality to us. Carolyn Barber has been writing her column in the Daily News since 1992. It appears on Saturdays. She can be contacted by e-mail at hur- car@yahoo.com.
