Stars on ice ABC swaps dancing shoes for blades By Christina Davies TV Media celebrities foxtrotting, jitterbug- ging and doing the tango on “Dancing With the Stars.” Now the network is upping S the ante and having stars com- pete with Salchows, Lutzes and Axels in the new spinoff,“Skat- ing With the Stars,”premiering Monday,Nov.22. On the Nov.2 “Dancing With the Stars”results show,hosts Tom Bergeron and Brooke Burke announced the celebrity lineup for the show’s first sea- son,which will be composed of ‘80s rock icon Vince Neil of Mot- ley Crue,Olympic skiing gold medalist Jonny Mosely,Bethen- ny Frankel of Bravo’s “Real Housewives of New York City,” film and Disney Channel star Brandon Mychal Smith,and daytime soap stars Rebecca Budig and Sean Young. The cast is not entirely new to figure skating,most having had lessons as children or hav- ing become amateur enthusi- asts later,but it may come as a surprise to audiences which cast member has perhaps the most experience with the sport. “I was a figure skater when I Brandon Mychal Smith, star of Disney’s “Sonny With a Chance,”will compete in “Skating With the Stars” was 12,”admits long-haired rocker Neil,who skated com- petitively for a few years in his youth.He told People magazine, “I haven’t skated for a long, long time. It’s exhilarat- ing but it’s also scary.You have a lot more gumption as a kid.” Budig will reportedly be part- nered up with U.S. figure skater Fred Palascak,who,along with his wife and skating partner Melanie Lambert,has also par- ticipated in the U.K.’s “Skating With the Stars”doppelganger, “Dancing on Ice.” Indeed, this isn’t the first ince 2005,ABC has been treating viewers to glimpses of their favorite time a network has seen the ap- peal of putting stars on skates. In 2006,after the first success- ful season of “Dancing With the Stars,”rival network Fox launched “Skating with Celebri- ties,”which failed to gain an audience and was not renewed after its first season.ABC is hop- ing that its experience with ‘“Dancing”will prevent this new series from slipping in the ratings. Interestingly, the reverse happened in the U.K.After the first season of its popular “Strictly Come Dancing”— the series that sired ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars”— BBC pro- duced a one-off special entitled “Strictly Ice Dancing.”Rival Brit studio ITV soon followed with its own series,originally called “Skating With Celebrities,”later re-named “Dancing on Ice,” which is still popular today.
