Linebacker Benny Goodman received an hon- orable mention. “It feels great to get what we worked for,” Smith said. His teammates agreed, adding they were humbled and honored by the accolades. With his hard running through- out the season Demerath made the team at running back. “He’s a warrior,” Red Bluff coach John Miller said. “A tough, tough kid and a tough runner.” Despite missing about half the season with an injury, Hill made the All-League team at wide receiver. “All the EAL coaches com- mented about how athletic he was,” Miller said. Reid, who played just about everywhere for the Spartans, made the All-League team as a defensive lineman. “He’s a pure athlete at every- thing he does,” Miller said, adding he was indispensible to the Spar- tans defense this season. Demerath Goodman Smith, a junior, was named as an All-League defensive back. “Football wise he knows the game probably as well or better than anyone on the field at times,” Miller said. That football intelligence is Hill what helped Smith produce some spectacular plays throughout 2010, Miller said. Goodman’s skills shined on the field and on the sidelines. “He stepped up big and became a team leader especially after Cory Those darn Tigers Reid Smith (Lyon) and Ian went down.,” Miller said. Starting at camp, Goodman motivated his teammates both through his play on the field and by saying the right things to them on the sidelines. Portola knocks Los Molinos out of playoffs, again VOLLEYBALL Portola 25 26 25 Los Molinos 23 24 15 By RICHGREENE DN Sports Editor LOSMOLINOS — For the third consecutive year Portola knocked the Lady Bulldogs out of the playoffs, with a three-game sweep in Thursday night’s Division-V semifinal. After falling to Portola on the road in the quarterfinals the past two sea- sons, the Lady Bulldogs produced an all-time school best in wins (34) in 2010 and earned a No. 2 seed as well as the right to host their rivals this time around. Despite another strong, supportive crowd it made no difference as Los Molinos fell on the wrong side of the scoreboard in the first two tightly con- tested games. Portola’s star Lindsey Compton then took over in Game 3 and the Lady Tigers advanced to Satur- day’s championship game at Red Bluff Union High School. The momentum won and lost in the first two games made all the difference. Nearly every point in those two games featured a long rally putting practically everyone in attendance — cliche or otherwise — on the edge of there seats. Portola’s largest lead of Game 1 was 20-15, but the Bulldogs came roar- ing back and following a Callie Car- ruth bump that found an empty spot in the Tigers defense the game was tied 23-23. Portola’s star Compton responded with a solid kill and team- mate Ashley Lopez finished off the game with an ace. Game 2 was just as close with the Bulldogs overcoming four and five- point deficits. Trailing 22-18, Kiersten Seaman Courtesy photo from Jennifer Borchard poked a cute little shot to brush the line for one of her nine kills. Breanna Gra- treaks then brought the Los Molinos faithful to their feet with one of the Bulldogs’ 12 blocks on the night. A rattled Tigers side then hit a pair of balls long and the game was tied 22- 22. Still tied 23-23 two points later, Nikki Quirke and Ashley Havel set up a wall that rattled Compton and earned the Bulldogs’ a game point. But Porto- la responded again. A quick set being sent over the net surprised the Bulldogs for an easy point to square things away at 24-24 and the Tigers grabbed the next two points as well as a 2-game lead. Compton could not be contained in the third game. The Bulldogs kept things close until the Tigers went on a seven-point run to pull out in front 17-10. They never looked back from there and once again ended the Bulldogs’ season. Garritt Sanders competes at the NSCIF finals. CROSS COUNTRY Red Bluff Spartans Red Bluff High School’s Cross Country banquet was held Wednesday nigh at the school’s cafeteria. Team families fed the group with a delicious potluck din- ner. All runners were honored for their contributions that made this year’s team a joy to coach. Sophia Oropeza and Aza Bravo received individual recognition for their top JV performances. Ben Watland and Erin Eicholtz also received recognition for their All-League seasons. Top honors went to seniors Garritt Sanders and Erin Eicholtz. Both exemplify the gutsy grit required to train and race competitively in this grueling sport. Garritt’s willingness to practice incredibly hard and always cheer for the entire team made him a standout. Erin’s overall positive attitude and leadership, beginning with her first practice as a freshman and ending with her last Section Championship race, made her the obvious choice for this top honor.
