8B – Daily News – Thursday, November 18, 2010 FURNITURE DEPOT MATTRESS House Dems NORTH VALLEY elect Pelosi WASHINGTON (AP) — House Democrats elected Nancy Pelosi to remain as their leader Wednesday despite mas- sive party losses in this month’s congressional elections that prompted some lawmakers to call for new leadership. Pelosi, the nation’s first female House speaker, will become minority leader when Republicans assume the majority in the new Congress in January. She defeated moderate Democratic Rep. Heath Shuler of North Carolina, 150-43, in secret balloting in a lengthy closed-door gathering of House Democrats in the Capitol. Pelosi, 70, overcame a MON.-THURS. 9:00-6:00 • FRI. 9:00-7:00 • SAT. 9:00-5:00 • SUN. 11:00-5:00 235 So. She remains popular among the liberals who dominate the party’s House caucus. But Shuler’s level of support — plus an earlier 129-68 vote against postponing the election that Pelosi wanted to wrap up quick- ly — underscored the degree of discontent in a party that Pelosi had largely bended to her will in the past four years. Republicans voted to keep John Boehner of Ohio as their top House leader. Boehner, who cel- ebrated his 61st birthday Wednesday, had no oppo- sition, and will become WORLD BRIEFING GM: Stock to speaker in the new Con- gress. Rep. Eric Cantor, R-Va., will become majority leader. Many House Democ- rats defended Pelosi, who said the bad economy and high unemployment were the reasons for her party’s election losses. Murkowski wins Alaska Senate race JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — Sen. Lisa Murkowski on Wednesday became the first Senate candidate in more than 50 years to win a write- in campaign, emerging vic- torious over her tea party rival following a painstak- ing, week-long count of hand-written votes. The victory completes a remarkable comeback for the Republican after her humiliating loss in the GOP primary to Joe Miller. Call 765-377-4501 sell for $33 DETROIT (AP) — General Motors says its common stock will sell for $33 per share when its initial public offering takes place Thursday. The IPO brings the U.S. gov- ernment closer to getting back part of the $50 bil- lion it gave GM to help it through bankruptcy pro- tection last year. The government will sell 412 million shares and get $13.6 billion. It will still have about 500 million shares, or about 33 percent of GM. It would have to sell them for $53 a share, or $26.4 billion, for taxpayers to get back their $50 billion back. The government and other GM owners will sell 550 million shares start- ing Thursday. The IPO will be worth up to $18.2 billion, making it one of the largest in U.S. history. Still a full two years away, the 2012 contests hung heavily over the Republican Governors Association’s annual con- ference. No fewer than four potential presidential candi- dates, including outgoing RGA Chairman Haley Bar- bour and Vice Chairman Tim Pawlenty, and a slew of GOP rising stars were among the 34 governors and governors-elect plan- ning to attend the two-day gathering. With 800 to 1,000 peo- warheads, and revive on- the-ground inspections that ceased when a previous treaty expired nearly a year ago. Sen. Jon Kyl, a leading Republican voice on the issue, dealt the pact a major setback Tuesday by coming out against a vote this year. Kyl, who’s been seeking more money and focus on maintaining and moderniz- ing the remaining arsenal, said more time was needed before moving forward. When pressed on the issue Wednesday, Kyl told reporters: ‘‘We’re talking in good faith.’’ GOP govs celebrate victories SAN DIEGO (AP) — The 2010 elections barely over, nearly three dozen current and incoming Republican governors already are looking to the next election, aiming to cap- italize on victories in presi- dential battlegrounds while ple expected, the meeting was to be the largest cele- bration by the political arm of the nation’s Republican governors since 1994 when the GOP posted huge gains. Two weeks ago, Republican candidates took advantage of a friendly environment to score enough victories to ensure that the party will control a majority of states — 29 — come January.
