2B Daily News – Friday, October 25, 2013 Education in Tehama County KEEP ON LEARNING Red Ribbon week launch The Red Ribbon balloon launch will take place at noon Monday, Oct. 28, in Red Bluff from the Post Office at 447 Walnut St. down to Main Street and south along Main Street to the corner of Main Street and Antelope Boulevard. In Corning, the launch will be at 275 Solano St. Red Ribbon Week is one of the oldest and largest drug prevention campaigns in the country. It was started to commemorate DEA Special Agent Enriqe "Kiki" Camarena. In 1985, Kiki died at the hands of drug traffickers in Mexico while fighting the battle against illegal drugs. His goal was to keep our country and children safe. The first national Red Ribbon Week was proclaimed by the US Congress in 1988 and is celebrated nationwide during the last week of October. This national event has come to be a reminder of Kiki and so many others who have given their lives fighting illegal drug trades. It has also become a symbol of support for the DEA's efforts to reduce demand for drugs through prevention and education programs. By wearing a red ribbon during the last week of October, Americans demonstrate their ardent opposition to illegal drugs. So, help show your support by remembering to wear red ribbons all week. Tehama County Drug and Alcohol Advisory Board, in partnership with Tehama County Health Services Agency, Tehama County Department of Education, Sunrise Rotary, Red Bluff Elks Lodge, Red Bluff and Corning schools and local businesses, will be releasing 2013 red balloons in honor of Red Ribbon Week. LMES celebrates STAR success Courtesy photo Eagle Scout candidate presents project The Sacramento River Discovery Center's Board of Directors, visitors and members of Boy Scout Troop #417 were privileged to have Gabe Sartori, Eagle Scout candidate, present the results of three years of his research on the Yellow Billed Magpie's that live in the Mendocino National Forest's Red Bluff Recreation Area. Gabe has spent over 115 hours documenting locations of 46 nests and monitoring the numbers of birds and the movement of the species from one area of the RBRA to other locations within the RBRA. Gabe became interested in the Magpie's in 2004 when West Nile Virus killed many of the Magpies in the area. The Yellow-billed Magpie is unique to California's Central Valley and is a great consumer of insects and thus very beneficial to the environment. This is a very unique project for an Eagle Scout candidate to undertake. Working with Ben Hughes, chairman of the SRDC Board of Directors, procedures were developed to document all nest locations and the populations increase or decrease. Gabe shared how he developed an "I Spy Game" as a way of teaching younger members of his troop to look for the nests and then to document their location using GPS coordinates. Gabe suggested that people interested in Geo-Caching might try doing a search for all 46 nests. Gabe has developed a website to provide information for local and visiting bird watchers. The website is found at www.redbluffmagpie.com. To contact Gabe, for more information, you can e-mail him at gabe@redbluffmagpie.com. With this presentation to the public, Gabe has completed another step on his journey to become an Eagle Scout. The display, shown in the background, will ultimately be donated to the SRDC and will become part of the environmental education programs of the center. Information about other programs at the SRDC is available at srdc.tehama.k12.ca.us, or e-mail Bobie Hughes at bhughe1@tehamaed.org. You can visit the Center at 1000 Sale Lane within the Mendocino National Forest's Red Bluff Recreation Area Tuesday through Saturday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. or by appointment.
