That was before he threw a single pitch. Doc delivered, and then some. Halladay added another victory to an almost perfect season Tuesday, unanimously winning the NL Cy Young Award and becom- ing the fifth pitcher to earn the honor in both leagues. ‘‘It’s by far the most fun I’ve ever had playing this game,’’ he said on a conference call from Mexico, where he was golfing with Phillies teammate Mike Sweeney, Cardinals star Chris Carpenter and pitcher Chris Young. ‘‘It was everything I hoped it would be,’’ Halladay said. VOLLEYBALL Etna 10 18 20 Los Molinos 25 25 25 By RICHGREENE DN Sports Editor LOSMOLINOS—Jessey Quirke opened the Lady Bulldogs’ Division-V quaterfinal match with an easy dink kill over the net. About an hour late a ball floated to her at the net again and all alone she slammed it home for match point. It wasn’t always that easy for Los Molinos, Tuesday, but the Lady Bull- dogs never felt any real danger in a three-game sweep of Etna. Los Molinos will host the winner of Portola and East Nicolaus in a D-V semifinal on Thursday as the Lady Bulldogs’ best season in school history continues. With heavy fan support, the Lady Bulldogs reeled off the first five points of the match and forced an early Etna timeout. They had set the tone. Nikki Quirke picked up a pair of aces in the first game, Callie Carruth and Kiersten Seaman played their usual strong games and the visiting Etna Lions committed one foul after another as Los Molinos cruised to take Game 1 25-10. The momentum continued into the second game as Los Molinos built up an early 11-3 lead highlighted by a jump serve ace from Seaman. At 18-12 the Lions had their best stretch of the match, which no coinci- dence was the Lady Bulldogs’ worst run. Etna’s Tandy Thackeray delivered four straight aces and the Lions closed the gap to 18-17. Seaman responded with a timely kill and the Lady Bulldogs regrouped to only give up one more point the rest of the game. Four points later Seaman beat a pair of Lions at the net to put Los Molinos on match point and following an Etna service error, the Lady Bulldogs had captured the second game 25-18. Etna didn’t go easy in Game 3, as neither team could produce more than a one-point lead until Nikki Quirke’s shot was blocked out of bounds to put Los Molinos up 12-9. From there Quirke delivered two more kills and Los Molinos built up a 17-11 lead. Etna wouldn’t go down without a fight and with Marina Gutleben serv- ing the Lions rallied back to force a 19- 19 tie. But once again an Etna error hurt the Lions. Then Los Molinos got a bit of luck when Ashley Havel bumped a ball at the net that took a fortunate bounce and over for a 21-19 Bulldogs lead. More Etna fouls followed as Brisel- da Castillo kept pumping in quality serves and the Bulldogs finished off a 25-20 win and earned trip to the semi- finals. Halladay received all 32 first-place votes in balloting by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. Adam Wain- wright of St. Louis was second and Ubaldo Jimenez of Col- orado was third. San Francisco ace Tim Lincecum, who won the past two NL Cy Youngs, finished 11th. ‘‘It’s surprising,’’ Halladay said. ‘‘There could have been a lot of cases made, strong cases.’’ Acquired from Toronto, Halladay adjusted to a new league and added to the 2003 AL Cy Young he won. He threw a perfect game at Florida on May 29, then tossed a no- hitter against Cincinnati in his postseason debut.
