4A Daily News – Thursday, October 24, 2013 Pastimes & Arts entertainment Kingston Trio set to take State stage Veterans free for Symphonic Winds' Band The Kingston Trio will be performing at the State Theatre in Red Bluff at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19. In 1957 The Kingston Trio emerged from San Francisco's North Beach club scene to take the country by storm, bringing the rich tradition of American folk music into the mainstream for the first time. During the late '50s and early '60s, the Trio enjoyed unprecedented record sales and worldwide fame, while influencing the musical tastes of a generation. Through changing times, the Trio has played on, remaining popular for a simple reason... great songs that sound as good today as the first time you heard them. And 56 years after Tom Dooley shot to the top of the charts, the Trio is still on the road thirty weeks a year, bringing back all the great memories and making new ones. The Kingston Trio today consists of Bill Zorn, George Grove and Rick Dougherty. They are continuing the Kingston Trio legacy with fantastic reviews, command performances and many standing ovations wherever they perform. As a fan put it, "our generation might not live forever, but I'll bet The Kingston Trio will. Saturday, Nov. 9, 2013 Social Hour: Tri-Tip Dinner: 5:30pm 6:30pm The California State University, Chico's Department of Music and Theatre celebrates Veterans Day early this year with a concert paying homage to veterans and military personnel everywhere. Presented at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 9 in Harlen Adams Theatre, the Symphonic Winds' fall concert, "Band Classics," is sure to resonate deeply with every member of the audience. Conducted by Vietnam veteran and Department of Music faculty member Dr. Royce Tevis, the concert can be described as very "Americana" and focuses on the audience listening to the music and embracing whatever feelings the pieces evoke. While many of the pieces to be performed are traditional band classics, there are some aspects in both the music and the presentation of the music that will bring a sense of modernity to the concert. "There's a bit of singing in the music," said Tevis "That was unheard of and lots of bands don't do it…but we're going to do it." Visual effects will be shined on a wall behind the ensemble, creating another way for the audience to connect with the music. "Band Classics" is a two-part concert. The first part will feature classic band pieces including the iconic "Star Spangled Banner," the dramatic "Symphonic Fanfare" and "English Folk Song Suite," a piece composed by Ralph Vaughan Williams that will give the audience a glimpse into the history of military music. According to Tevis, the second part of the concert is dedicated to our military veterans. The pieces featured will include "Americans We," a unifying piece by Henry Fillmore; "Armed Forces Salute," a service medley containing recognizable American classics that pay tribute to all five branches of the military; and "Star and Stripes Forever," a longstanding crowd favorite. "Bands have played these songs for many years," Tevis said. "Bands are known for playing for functions; in particular functions for veterans." While Tevis is known for ending his concerts with high-energy pieces that result in thunderous applause, he has something else is mind for "Band Classics." The concert will conclude with a piece that Tevis has a personal history with and is sure to resonate with each audience member — veteran and non-veteran alike — in a profound and unique way. "It's going to be a quiet, reflective ending," said Tevis. "I don't want to give it away, but I hope it triggers something special with the audience." In order to honor local veterans, this concert is free to any person who attends in military uniform or presents their military identification card. American flags will be given to all attendees upon entering the concert venue. The lobby area, as well as the inside of Harlen Adams Theatre, will be adorned in red, white and blue streamers. The first 250 attendees will receive a free commemorative American flag.
