Thursday, October 24, 2013 – Daily News 3A Community people&events First plant show Neighborhood Legistlature on Patriots' agenda By Charlotte Rodriguez California is a huge state that lacks true representation by its Legislature. Do you know your legislator? Does he or she know you? Do they care about your thoughts on any given legislation? How would you like to personally know your representative? How refreshing it would be to have someone understand your thoughts and concerns about legislation, stand with you on your beliefs? Someone that would help you protect your private property rights. John Cox, former GOP presidential candidate, chairman of Rescue California and creator of the proposed Neighborhood Legislature, says lack of representation is the main problem in California. Cox proposes subdividing each Assembly district into 100 neighborhood districts that represent 5,000 voters, and subdivide each Senate district into 100 neighborhood districts that represent 10,000 voters. Cox has spent time in New Hampshire which has this kind of representation "It's working very well in New Hampshire and if can work there, it can work here," Cox said. We need to cut off the power of lobbyist and special interest groups, we can do that with this kind of representation. Our candidates wouldn't need big money behind them, they would go door to door, have town halls and meet the people they are hoping to represent. As Cox puts it, we would have "peaceful transfer of power from the funders to the people." A representative of the Neighborhood Legislature will be speaking at the Corning Patriots meeting on Oct. 24. The meeting will be held at the Corning Senior Center 1015 South St., at 6 p.m. the public is encouraged to attend this very informative meeting. 90 years ago... Black-White Revue is sadly lacking in many things The Black and White Revue is a good dollar show. When it goes beyond that it is getting money under false pretense. As a musical entertainment it is a disappointment; the comedy it promised never delivered at all. There were no female voices in the company, and eliminating a very good male quartet, there were no voices at all. — Oct. 24, 1923 DAILY NEWS RED BLUFF TEHAMA COUNTY THE VOICE OF TEHAMA COUNTY SINCE 1885 VOLUME 128, NUMBER 238 HOW TO REACH US On the Web: www.redbluffdailynews.com MAIN OFFICE: NEWS Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. News Tip Hotline: 527-2153 FAX: (530) 527-9251 E-mail: clerk@redbluffdailynews.com Daytime: (530) 527-2151 Sports: Ext. 111 Obituaries: Ext. 101 After hours: (530) 527-2153 ______________________ ADVERTISING DEPT. The staff have to haul all the needed tools and plants up and down the gentle hills on carts attached to their bikes. Some equipment is made of their own ingenuity to fill the need. The second rainy morning P. Allen Smith, gardening expert and TV host, gave a wonderfully funny presentation entitled A Journey of Colors, Trends and Textures. You may have seen him on QVC or other garden related TV shows. Obvious to say, he talked about combining a variety of plants in gardens or containers, any size. His advice when creating a container of plants is "thriller, filler, and spiller." Thriller being a tall eye-catching plant; filler, a mounding plant; and spiller, the plant that cascades down the container. Be creative. Also, part of the plant show was a stay at the Grand Hotel where "Somewhere in Time" starring Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour was filmed in 1980. A perfect setting since the hotel was built in late 1800's and catered to "fashionable guests." The Grand is still elegant with majestic furnishings, five course meals, and fantastic Tea Gardens Proven Winners brought in loads of plants to display in gigantic containers across the famous veranda of the Grand. Breathtaking. I have to say here how small the world is. I met a graduate of CSU, Chico. Shane Rodgers graduated with a business degree and works for Proven Winners in Michigan. One of the highlights of my trip. Everywhere I looked whether on the veranda, in flower beds, or in the private gardens, hanging baskets, containers, or borders, I saw amazing plants that grow here in our area: ornamental grasses, petunias, supertunias, begonias, dahlias, lilies, heucheras, coleus, calibrachoa, hydrangea, weigela. So many beautiful plants, so many beautiful gardens. I could hardly wait to get home to plant more flowers. PAL tries to Run Drugs Out of Town Tehama County Police Activities League's Inaugural "Run Drugs Out of Town Run" Sunday was a huge success. Tehama County is a very giving and supportive community but Shasta County sent a few folks down to this event, too. Each participant received a medal and T shirt that proclaims a very important message, "I'm a winner, I don't do drugs!" Present were Tehama County Sheriff Dave Hencratt, PAL Board President from the California Highway Patrol, Philip McIntosh, and Kathy Hausman, Tehama County Sheriff's Office, the Secretary and Treasurer for nearly 20 years. Agent David Nichols from Parole showed up and so did Bill Logan from the Veterans Administration in Redding. The Tehama County Sheriff Explorers were also present to lend a hand wherever they could. Several teachers and Police reports The following information is compiled from Red Bluff Police Department, Tehama County Sheriff's Department, Corning Police Department and California Highway Patrol. Sighting • An anonymous caller reported seeing a bright light in the sky around 10:03 p.m. Tuesday about a quarter-mile north of Jellys Ferry Road and about one or two miles west of Interstate 5. The light got brighter as it got closer to the ground. My sister insisted I go with her late August to the Grand Garden Show on Mackinaw Island which happens to be between upper and lower peninsulas of Michigan. Five hundred people showed up for this plant show from all over the states and one lone Californian. The Garden Show included presentations, two-day stay at historic Grand Hotel and tours of 11 local island gardens. I am so glad I went. The Grand Garden Show was sponsored by a local island business, Barnwell Landscape and Garden Services, Grand Hotel and Proven Winners plant company. This wasn't just a plant show; it was a "step back in time." The island doesn't have motorized vehicles except for emergency vehicles. So the first impression of the beauty of this island is made from the ferry as you dock at the pier. Did I mention it rained on us the afternoon of arrival and every morning of our stay? That's the beauty of the island. Organizers promptly moved morning presentations from the Tea Gardens to the inside conference room. The first whole group presentation demonstrated the unique challenges island Now in Stock! parents were from Bidwell Elementary School indicated they want to be more involved next time. There were 15 involved from Bidwell. The last week in January is National Drug Facts Week with Saturday, Feb. 2 serving as the final day. PAL's next Run Drugs Out of Town Run is being looked at for participation on that day and the date will most likely be either that day or a Saturday in early spring. Justin Shults won the raffle prize, a $50 gift certificate to the M & M Ranch House Restaurant. M & M and many other businesses have supported the community for several years. For a complete list of those who supported this event and to see more photos and video, please visit Run Drugs Out of Our Communities or Tehama County PAL Martial Arts on Facebook. The event featured a 1K, a 1 mile and a 5K. It served as a fundraiser for PAL — a 501 (c) (3) non profit youth drug demand reduction and anti-bullying education organization. Shasta and Butte counties were also involved and sponsored this event. PAL provides free programs to youth ages 5 through completion of high school.
