Underwriters Laboratories (UL), a leading independent safety organiza- tion, is urging families to dedicate just a fraction of the time and attention spent shopping for gifts and decor on making sure their purchases are being used safely. The following tips - taking as little as one minute each - can help families rec- ognize, identify and prevent hazards that too often can result in accidents or tragedy: • Check your lights: Before hanging light strings, inspect them for damage and wear. Cracks, frays and bare wires can pose fire or shock hazards. • Decorate with a safe eye: Cords should not be run under carpets or tacked up with metal nails or staples. Small decorations can be choking hazards and should be kept out of the reach of toddlers. • Be flame aware: Always blow out unattended candles and teach children to stay away from lit candles or fireplaces. • Prevent a spark: Only use light strings and other electrical decorations that bear the UL Mark near the plug, signifying that safety standards have been met. For additional ideas and activities on how to “Commit a Minute” this holiday season, visit www.SafetyAtHome.com over 1200 blankets yearly (through Wacog) to people who are cold. They work with several other agencies and churches, including the highway patrol, police dept. and others to help anyone in need that is brought to them. Pastor Mike Hobby and his wife Linda started their ministry many years ago, when they both were going through some rough times and decided that their lives were meant to change. They saw their mission as being to feed the hungry and clothe the naked (Isaiah 58) and their ministry was formed. They believe that it is very different to want something as opposed to need something, and they feel that God will provide for their needs, and always has. Isaiah 58 is a much needed church run facility whose sole purpose is to do God’s work and help those in need. They are not judgemental, they only try to help anyone who wants to help themselves. They give a hand up, not a hand out. People who are down on their luck can get a shower, clean clothes, food, and job referral, and it makes them feel good about themselves and perhaps helps them to get back on their feet again. Isaiah 58 will be having a Thanksgiving meal again this year, and will do another one at Christmas, along with meals every day from now til late spring. They can use any donated food items, clothing, toiletries etc. to help with their mission, and of course, any monetary donation is always appreciated. They pro- vide a great service to this area, and hope to do even more in the future--meals for shutins, veterans help, etc. If you would like to help, please visit them at their church on Moon Mountain Road, or call 927-3124.
