Theta 1971-75 remember Kathy dancing Hustle" and Barry White, the corner booth at The Wheel, singing Tri Delta songs with a keg on the back patio (in 1974 executive office allowed KU Deltas to be a part of a pilot program to allow 3.2 beer in the Chapter House. The pilot program ended after one year.), driving the Cruise Route around all the fraternity houses, and her boundless warmth, good humor, and enthusiasm. Kathy's enthusiasm and love for the Chapter House never waned, and in the late '80s, Kathy began serving on the Theta Omega House Corporation Board. Among her many contributions was this simple but profound question: "How could our alumnae contribute to the future of Theta Omega and have their contributions be tax deductible?" Her answer: the Theta Omega of Delta Delta Delta Educational Foundation, which she established in 1993. Its mission is to promote scholarship within the chapter, provide resources to assist chapter members in achieving academic success, raise funds for scholarships, and develop an appropriate technological learning environment. Kathy was the foundation's president during those initial years. Joining her on that first board were Sally Latinis Billingsley '59, Pat Domann '73, Carol Lynne Byington Ellis '63, Karen Gelvin '78, Layne Dwyer Hunley '66, and Janet Riley '66. Since 1993, the Foundation has maintained a computer room, complete with copier, installed Wi-Fi throughout the chapter house, and has purchased study tables for the rec room. And every April at Pansy Breakfast, the Foundation awards up to three scholarships to active members. The foundation has awarded scholarships to 66 Theta Omega members worth $27,300. "Being awarded a scholarship allows me to concentrate on my studies and enjoy my time at college, instead of worrying about increased tuition costs. Rewarding academic and personal success is key to keeping a happy, motivated, and dedicated chapter," Katie Filina '11, chapter president, said. This year, Kathy has new members on the Foundation board to help: Lindsay Puett Peattie '97, president; Pat Domann, treasurer; Janet Riley, secretary; Natalie Wolf Blume '99; Carol Lynne Byington Ellis; Lisa Martincich Stuart '99; Noreen Checchi Dupriest '92; and Elaine Woodford Level '86. They are all working to increase the number of scholarships awarded at Pansy Breakfast, as well as the amount of each individual scholarship. Kathy has a request for every Theta Omega: "Thanks to generous alumnae support, the Foundation has helped keep our chapter academically strong. Please consider the impact Theta Omega had on your life, and then join us in our efforts to keep Theta Omega strong by making your own contribution." It may have been a while since she's danced "The Hustle" (Kathy's not saying) or held court at The Wheel, but the enthusiasm Kathy had for Tri Delta as an undergraduate, and a House Corporation and Foundation Board member continues to this day. In upcoming months, you'll have the opportunity to assist the chapter in a fully tax-deductible way, building on Kathy's energy and vision. Look for a mailing in the coming weeks.
