Surging Sharks beat Detroit in shootout DETROIT (AP) — After scoring 39 goals in their first eight games, the San Jose Sharks proved they can play pretty well defensively, too. Logan Couture scored in the shootout and San Jose beat the Detroit Red Wings 1-0 on Monday night. The Sharks (8-0-1) are the NHL's last team without a regulation loss. ''We scored a lot of goals in our first eight games. We're not going to keep scoring like that,'' Couture said. Each goalie got a shutout for not allowing a goal in 65 minutes. Antti Niemi — who got his 24th career shutout — made 24 saves for San Jose and Jimmy Howard, who earned his 17th shutout, stopped 27 shots. ''Not much space out there. It was very playoff like,'' Sharks coach Todd McLellan said. ''Both teams a prevent-type game. ... It was a chess match, there's no doubt about it. Even on the power play and penalty kills, the teams didn't get a lot of looks.'' Howard praised the way his team played without the puck. ''I thought we did a good job on their top guys. We didn't give them a lot of room and space. Another thing that was a positive was we didn't give up a lot of odd-man rushes,'' Howard said. ''That's been an Achilles' heel of late for us. We did a great job of keeping the third man high in the offensive zone, making them come 200 feet. We didn't turn pucks over. It's a good sign.'' It was Niemi's third shutout against Detroit. He also stopped Todd Bertuzzi on Detroit's final shootout attempt with a spectacular pad save. It was the first game of a four-game Eastern road swing for San Jose. Detroit's Brendan Smith hit the outside of the goal post with 4:57 remaining in regulation. Niemi made an outstanding save on Daniel Alfredsson's shot from the bottom of the right circle 7:31 into the second period. San Jose outshot Detroit 7-4 in a scoreless opening period. By RICH GREENE DN Staff Writer The Spartans put on a show for Red Bluff High School alumni Friday night coming from down two scores in the fourth quarter for a nail-biting 27-26 win over Wheatland on Homecoming. Just 72 hours ago Red Bluff was a down-and-out 3-3 team. Now thanks to a forfeited win and a never give up attitude the Spartans find themselves 5-2 and trending upwards. Knotted up 14-14 at halftime the Spartans fumbled on their second play of the second half and Wheatland made them pay. Jackson Hopking hooked up with Jordan Samson on a 25-yard touchdown pass and Wheatland vaulted out in front. Red Bluff was without star running back Christian Shaffer for the game, but it was his role as punter the Spartans seemed to miss the most. Trading punts back-and-forth Wheatland took advantage of a shanked Red Bluff kick and took over the ball at the Spartans 35-yard-line. They capped another scoring drive when Khalil Collier took the ball into the end zone from 4 yards out to make the game 26-14. Wheatland went for a 2-point conversion after every touchdown. They only converted 1-of-4 and it would prove costly. Red Bluff took over the ball late in the third quarter, down 12 and perhaps with their season on the balance. Twice they converted on third down and found themselves at Wheatland's 19 facing fourth-and-7. Greg Dufour rolled to his right then threw back to the left end zone where Chase Root was waiting all alone. The ball hung in the air long enough for some prayers to be said before Root made the catch and the Homecoming crowd erupted. Red Bluff's defense held strong on the next possession, forcing a punt and giving the Spartans the ball back at their own 26. That's when Shaffer's replacement at running back Daniel Koenig put the team on his back. Koenig carried four straight times before eventually having to come out of the game after he lost his wind. He would eventually come back, but not before Joseph Bosetti made a tremendous leaping grab on a 29-yard pass play to put the Spartans in the red zone. Four plays later Koenig punched it in from a yard out and the Spartans led 27-26 with 3:58 to play. It would be a long four minutes for that point to hold up. Or so it seemed, until Sam Hendricks stripped the Wheatland return man and Kade Lewis jumped on the ball for his second fumble recovery of the game. Lewis also had an interception in the first half. But the Spartans couldn't run the clock off and eventually turned the ball back over to Wheatland at the Pirates 10 with 1:31 on the clock. It would be a long 91 seconds for that point to hold up. The Pirates started driving and eventually reached Red Bluff territory when once again the Spartans forced and recovered a fumble. But once again Red Bluff couldn't run the clock out and Wheatland took over around midfield with six seconds left. It would be a long six seconds for that point to hold up. Wheatland's first Hail Mary failed. The second turned some stomachs at Spartan stadium. A Wheatland receiver caught a deep pass around the Spartans 20 then as he was being tackled tried to lateral the ball. A teammate scooped it up off the turf and ran it into the end zone as time expired. But a flag was thrown on the play and after a lengthy discussion by the officials, it was deemed to be a forward lateral. However the Spartans had to accept the penalty, which allowed Wheatland an untimed down at the Spartans 35. Still that point held up. The last attempt sailed through a sea of hands and through the back of the end zone and Red Bluff had found a way to prevail in what was an entertaining football game. Red Bluff battled through a slew of injuries and Wheatland to their credit played hard throughout the game. Hopkins finished with three touchdown passes. He connected with Samson and Justin Hawkins in the first half. Red Bluff's first half touchdowns came on Dufour and Mike Stone runs. Koenig was the key on offense, racking up 82 yards on 21 carries. He gave equal credit to his offensive line for his performance. "They did their job I did mine," he said. Coach Corey Hein said his team still needs to find a way to play a complete four quarters of football going forward. "They have glimpses of really good play," he said of his Spartans. And outside of the injury bug, they also seem to have a lot of luck on their side. Raiders still banged up on offensive line ALAMEDA (AP) — The Oakland Raiders returned from their bye week facing many of the same questions on the offensive line that they had when they left town last week. The Raiders began practice Monday with the same makeshift line that struggled mightily in their last game eight days ago in Kansas City with many of their starters still dealing with injuries. Backups Lamar Mady and Matt McCants are once again working with the first team for the Raiders (24) and right guard Mike Brisiel was back at center after playing there for the first time ever in an NFL game in the 247 loss to the Chiefs. Coach Dennis Allen said it's too soon to know whether center Stefen Wisniewski, right tackle Tony Pashos or guard/center Andre Gurode will be healthy enough to play Sunday against Pitts- burgh. ''I'm hopeful we'll have more guys back, but I won't know until Wednesday,'' Allen said. Wisniewski has missed the past two games with an injured knee and his absence has been notable because of his role making the line calls and organizing the line. He was working on the side Monday with a trainer instead of with the team during the open portion of practice. Gurode, a former Pro Bowl center, filled in admirably when he had to move from left guard to center but then he left in the first half against the Chiefs with an injured quadriceps. That forced Brisiel to move over to center for the first time since he played in NFL Europe in 2007 and put former practice squader Mady at right guard. Pashos was knocked out of the Chiefs game with a hip flexor and has also been hampered by a groin injury, giving McCants his first playing time as a pro. Rookie tackle Menelik Watson has had only about 10 practices with the team since the start of training camp because of injuries to his calf and knee and remains sidelined. Left tackle Khalif Barnes is the only player to remain in his spot for all six games this season although he had to move from the right side to the left right before the season because of injuries to starter Jared Veldheer and Watson. That led to a reworked line that allowed nine sacks in the loss to the Chiefs and has given up 20 the past three weeks after allowing just seven in the first three games. ''We've kind of been doing it all year long with guys rotating and playing different spots but it's real tough when you do it at the center position,'' Barnes said. ''Especially when you have both centers go down. It's tough because you don't really work with that center on different types of timings, silent counts.'' The Raiders hope that the experience the backups gained during that game in a loud environment against one of the best passrushing teams in the league will pay dividends if they are forced into action again this season. ''There's no replacement for experience,'' Allen said. ''Unfortunately at times guys have to get their experience in a tough situation in a game environment. That's the way you get better as a football team.'' NOTES: Oakland has lost its last 10 post-bye week games by a combined score of 271139. ... LB Miles Burris also worked out on the side as he tries to work his way back from offseason knee surgery. Burris is eligible to be activated from the physically unable to perform list at any time. ... The Raiders signed G Jason Foster to the practice squad and released RB George Winn.
