THE cal Sig 2 Alpha Beta Enjoys Successful Fall Semester Chapter Thankful for Renovations Provided by Generous Alumni A fter a summer of renovations, the Alpha Beta Chapter is off to another great start this fall. Thanks to the efforts of our Housing Corporation Board, led by President Jeff Bordalampe '77, we now have a newly paved driveway, a new exterior wall, and new flooring on the second and third floors. These renovations, combined with a number of other improvements to the house, will greatly help Alpha Beta moving forward. program, our goal is to rank in the top five fraternities by the end of the school year. House Improvements Lead to Improved Recruitment Alpha Beta Leaders on Campus Aided by a fresh, renovated chapter house, Recruitment Chairmen Matt Ruetten '16 and Kevin Graham '15 put together an outstanding recruitment week, culminating in the pledging of 13 young men who look to be future leaders of the chapter. Derby Days a Success With consistent philanthropic activity, Alpha Beta remains committed as ever to serving the community. Early in the semester we spent the afternoon serving meals to the homeless in honor of the Merlin Olsen Day of Service. Derby Days was also a success last spring, with Derby Days Chairmen Cyrus Rais '13 and Maximiliano Galindo '13 raising over $14,000 for Operation Smile, a program that provides funding for corrective surgery to 40 children with cleft palates. Jack Hensley '15 and Robert Khoury '15 hand out pies at a community event. Active Chapter Focused on Academics Alumni and undergraduates enjoyed a barbeque at the Cal Homecoming event October 5. Our chapter has taken on a renewed focus on academics this year, and the studious approach has paid off. We were able to significantly raise our chapter GPA by .13 points to 3.27, consistent with the all-Greek average. With a number of new scholastic initiatives this year, including competitive GPA teams and a mentorship When they're not working directly in our chapter, Alpha Beta brothers take pride in being leaders outside of Sigma Chi. Entering his second semester as Interfraternity Council president, Andrey Kisel '14 continues to advocate on behalf of the greater Greek community and with campus organizations. We are also pleased to welcome back Wonsang Soh '13, who left Berkeley immediately after his pledgeship to serve in the Korean military. After his two admirable years of service, we're excited to have Won back with us and involved in our chapter. Steak Dinners a Favorite among Alumni We have particularly enjoyed welcoming back our alumni, who came in droves to what was easily our largest alumni steak dinner in the past few years. If you haven't had a chance yet, come by and see the house. As always, feel free to contact me if you have any questions regarding the chapter or about visiting the house.
