A PUBLICATION OF THE Gamma Eta Chapter of Alpha Tau Omega UNIVERSITY of Texas s Fall 2013 Gamma Eta Continues Development and Achievement S ince the original publication of the Gamma Eta Gazette, the common theme in the last few years has been one of continued development and achievement. In this regard, it seems to be business as usual for the Gamma Eta Chapter. Class is back in session at the University of Texas and with the new school year comes some new faces, as well as new opportunities, for the undergraduate chapter. In August, Gamma Eta was once again recognized at ATΩ Congress in Indianapolis. The undergraduate chapter received two excellence awards, along with honorable mention for the True Merit Award—one of the national fraternity's top honors—for the second straight year. In addition, the Board of Trustees was presented the Upper Alpha Award for its support and service to the undergraduate chapter. Although these awards are encouraging to both undergraduates and alumni alike, there is still room for improvement. One challenge the undergraduates have faced over the years is balancing the many requirements that come along with managing chapter finances. As a result, the chapter has enlisted the help of OmegaFi. This solution is already paying dividends and will provide greater efficiency for the management of the chapter going forward. Another important opportunity for growth is through the lasting commitment to reconnect with Gamma Eta alumni. The continued success of ATΩ at the university is largely determined by the ability of the chapter to remain engaged with the brothers that paved the way before them. In recognition of this truth, the undergraduate chapter will be hosting its first Gamma Eta Alumni Awards Banquet. The purpose of the banquet will be to serve as a platform to reconnect with ATΩ brothers and recognize alumni who continue to support the chapter's efforts. The event will be held on the night of Friday, November 22, at the chapter house in Austin (see page 4 for more details). Please help spread the word with your pledge brothers. We hope to see you there! If you have any suggestions, alumni news, or ideas for articles, please e-mail them to Alumni Relations Chairman Craig Chick '94 at craigchick@hotmail.com or mail them to Alpha Tau Omega – Gamma Eta Chapter; P.O. Love and Respect, Greg Erp '07 Chairman, Board of Trustees (512) 658-3173 / gerp@utexas.edu Gamma Eta Awarded by ATW Nationals T he Gamma Eta Chapter of ATΩ is thriving in Austin. We have gone through many changes over the past year, and the chapter hopes to improve the UT community and grow as a fraternity. Our chapter earned several awards for our efforts over the 2012-13 school year from ATΩ National, including an excellence in recruiting award, an Alpha Award for an outstanding Board of Trustees, and an honorable mention for True Merit. We were also excited to prove ourselves as leaders on campus when we hosted an anti-hazing seminar in October with Lieutenant General Jefferson Davis Howell as the key speaker. This summer the chapter's finances experienced a complete overhaul. In the past, much of collections and the finances of the chapter were the sole responsibility of the treasurer. With QuickBooks and excel his only tools, this put a lot of responsibility on the shoulders of the treasurer. Gamma Eta has now contracted OmegaFi to collect dues on the chapter's behalf. OmegaFi is a professional billing agency that allows all of our members to view their balance online at any time with itemized billing, and the service has made paying dues as easy as possible for our members. This new service has drastically increased our collection rate, as well as helped us communicate with our members. Looking forward to the rest of this fall semester, we hope to radically improve our alumni relations program. The alumni officers are planning an ATΩ awards banquet in addition to our annual tailgate. We invite you to join us for our first hosting of this (Continued on page 2)
