FAX: (530) 527-2151 Ext. 122 (530) 527-2151 Ext. 133 (530) 527-5774 By Colette Bauer Two weeks ago Millie Seiber wrote an article about prunes which got me thinking about, of all things, prunes. Since my husband and I own a very small prune orchard, we try to support the industry. Last year, according to the 2012 Tehama County Crop Report, fruit and nut crops added $206,903,200 to the economy of our county. Of this amount over a hundred million dollars came from walnuts and 43 million from the olive industry. The next highest cash crop was almonds bringing in almost 28 million and fourth on this list comes prunes with better than 27 million. I tell you this to emphasize the importance of agriculture in the economy of Tehama County and why we support the agriculture community. One way we support the industry is by using the products ourselves and sharing them with others. I am including two of my favorite prune recipes. I have been making Chocolate Covered Prunes for about thirty years and the recipe has evolved. This is my latest version. Pick fresh prunes, pit them — I cut them in half and remove the pit — and dry them. Before I coat the prunes, I steam them until they are soft. Or you can skip all of this and buy packaged prunes at the store. Chocolate Covered Prunes Gather: Harvest Moon, the Tehama County CattleWomen's annual luncheon, fashion show and boutique will be held Nov. 9 at Carino's Event Center at Rolling Hills Casino in Corning. Chairwoman Jeannie Garton invites the public to attend the annual social event. This year marks the 56th year that the CattleWomen have staged their annual gala. The event begins at 10 a.m. with the boutique and Cowboy Pantry. CattleWomen will stock the pantry tables with goodies from their kitchens and gardens. In addition, 10 guest vendors will offer jewelry, makeup, scented candles, vintage cowboy kitchen décor, homemade household décor, leather crafts and photographs for sale. In keeping with CattleWomen tradition, a beef filet steak lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m. The meal's first course is a gourmet harvest salad and the grand finale will be an elegant key lime dessert. Luncheon seating is by prepaid reservation only. The 36 Lady Prune Cake has long been a county favorite. It is so named because 36 ladies entered the same recipe in a contest sponsored by the Prune Advisory Board. 36 Lady Prune Cake Ingredients: 1 cup oil 3 eggs 1 1/4 cups sugar 1tsp nutmeg 1 tsp cinnamon 1 tsp. allspice I tsp baking soda 1 tsp vanilla 1 cup butter milk 2 cups sifted flour 1 cup chopped walnuts, 1 cup chopped stewed prunes. Directions: Mix the ingredients in a large bowl and mix well. Pour the batter into an oiled bunt pan and bake at 350 degrees for 45 min. or until done (use the tooth pick test). Topping While the cake is cooking mix the following in a large sauce pan: 1 cup sugar, 1/2 cup butter milk 1/4 tsp. baking soda 1 stick margarine 1 tbs. Kayro syrup Directions: Cook the ingredients until the mixture boils and changes color to a darkish brown or forms a soft ball. After you remove the cake from the pan, prick the top with a fork and drizzle the glaze over the still warm cake.
