Items were bought with can food — one can buys one item no matter how large, small or valuable. No money was accepted. All items not purchased and canned food collected will be donated and distributed to local food banks, churches, shelters, non profit organizations and families in Red Bluff. Bishop James R. Beeman, his counselor Dale Fry, and Antelope Ward members wearing their familiar yellow Mormon Helping Hands vests delivered more than 600 pounds of can and died foods to Major Frank Severs. A big thank you to all the donors and volunteers who helped to make this year’s community service project a suc- cess and to be able to help The Salvation Army and other charitable organizations help our own friends and neighbors in their time of great need. We hope to see you all again next year and be able to help even more. Meet the Quakers The public is invited to a presentation sponsored by Red- ding Friends Meeting titled Meet the Quakers, 10 a.m. to noon, Sunday, Dec. 12, at First United Methodist Church, Room 10, 1825 East St. in Redding. This is an educational and experiential presentation on Quaker faith and practice. Topics will include Quaker val- ues, Quaker faith in action, an experience of Quaker wor- ship and personal insights and reflections of individual Quakers. Participants will develop a basic understanding of the Quaker faith and the contribution of Quakers in helping to create a more just and peaceful world. Refreshments will be served. The schedule is as follows: Short Presentation on Quaker Values Short Presentation on Quaker Faith in Action Questions and Discussion An Experience of Quaker Worship Refreshments and Socializing Redding Friends Meeting is a monthly meeting of the Religious Society of Friends, or Quakers. The Quaker Faith was founded in England and continues to be active in con- temporary issues. The basic belief of Quakers is that there is “that of God” or an inner light in all persons. Redding Friends Meeting meets on the second and fourth Sundays of each month at 11 a.m. in Room 10 of the Methodist Church. Have you ever noticed that problems seem to "hit you" when you first arise in the morning? Unless you are one of the rare peo- ple who awaken, and bound out of bed full of energy and "get up and go," you probably begin your day "in low gear." I’ll be first to admit that, as I’ve aged, mornings are sometimes dif- ficult. For example, this morning I awakened with aches and pains, and before I knew it I was grum- bling to the Lord. "Don’t you see me Lord? Don’t you care that I’m hurting like this?" Then came a quick change, for I knew my atti- tude was wrong. "I’m sorry Lord, please forgive me for grumbling." According to 1 John 1:9, I’m for- given –"If we confess our sins; He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." (NKJ) Now I was off to a positive start for the new day. I’m glad for the attitude change because I’m so blessed. When we stop and think about our blessing instead of our problems, we can "kick the wrong thoughts out the door." Grumbling is not a word often used today, but we do complain and we are often unthankful. Most of us are guilty of voicing our complaints. Some of us don’t even understand that complaining falls within the realm of sin. "But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphe- mers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy." (2 Timothy 3:1,2 NKJ) The Israelites did a lot of grum- bling after God delivered them from slavery in Egypt. We wonder how they could complain at all, especially since God had parted the Red Sea and saved them. They even complained against Moses and Aaron, not believing that God could provide water for them. But, God not only provided water in the wilderness, but daily manna (bread). They complained about the manna too, for food from heaven became boring to them. What an unthankful group! We would never be like them, would we? Unfor- tunately we know that we are just like the Israelites, when it comes to not being satisfied with having our basic needs met. Do we need to guard our own hearts? God’s Word gives us the answer. "Guard you heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life." (Proverbs 4:23 NLT) Grum- blers beware, for God cares about your attitude of heart. "Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus"(1 Thessalonians 5:18 NLT). When our life is totally dedicat- ed to Jesus Christ, we can rest in the knowledge that Christ is with us in all circumstances. Even though we do not always under- stand the circumstances in life, we can always find reasons to contin- ually praise the Lord. Why? Because, He has promised to never leave or forsake us. (See Hebrews 13:5, Romans 8:35-39) Therefore, complaining and grumbling need not be part of our mindset. One way to guard our heart is to recall what is written in Isaiah, chapter 40:12-14. "Who else has held the oceans in his hand? Who has measured off the heavens with his fingers? Who else knows the weight of the earth or has weighed Worker fired for burning Quran NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — A former New Jersey Transit employee who was fired after publicly burning pages from the Quran on the ninth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks is suing to get his job back. The American Civil Liberties Union filed suit Friday morning on behalf of Derek Fenton. Fenton burned part of the Quran to protest plans to build an Islamic center several blocks from the former site of the World Trade Center in New York City. Police ushered him from the scene, but he was not arrested. NJ Transit said it fired him for violating its code of ethics. He had worked for the agency for 11 years. (NLT) Or, who thinks it is ok to spend time grum- bling against God? If we have made Jesus our Lord and Savior, we are blessed people. But, do we really love Jesus? Do we love Him with all our heart, soul and mind? These are questions that only we can answer. "And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind, and all your strength." (Mark 12:30 NLT) So, it seems reason- able to say, "The more we love God, the less we will grumble. If you are living outside the family of God, a life of peace and God’s blessings is waiting for you. Give yourself to the One who died for you. In Chapter 4 of Acts, you will find that Jesus is the only way to salvation. "Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved."
