‘Defending’ Sin City Hotshot lawyers struggle outside court By Sarah Jamieson TV Media T hey’re slick, wry and quick-witted courtroom operators, but unlike most lawyers, you won’t see the at- torneys from “The Defenders” turning down any cases, big or small — even if winning a case means risking disbarment. Wednesdays on CBS, Jim Belushi and Jerry O’Connell star as two men who know what they’re doing in the courtroom but who may be clueless once they step out in the real world. They’re banking that the eclec- tic list of clients they acquire will move them closer to the riches upon which their beloved Las Vegas is built. Nick Morelli (Belushi) is the kind of attorney most budding stars idolize when trying to move up in the world of law — he’s hardworking, earnest, sharp and gives every client his all, even if it’s a relatively small case by most standards. He’s a little more loose on his footing when it comes to rela- tionships, though.Estranged from his wife,Morelli has had difficulty coming to terms with her departure while still trying to be a part of his child’s life. However, his partner,Pete Kaczmarek (O’Connell), repre- location in Las Vegas, the most storied of all American cities, certainly has to help — there’s got to be some potential in the phrase “what happens in Ve- gas, stays in Vegas.” Of course, the show is Jerry O’Connell stars in “The Defenders” sents the most feared of all sleazy lawyer cliches — he’s forever pursuing his impulsive desire for women, fine suits, fast cars and gambling. Usually,Kaczmarek spends his Friday nights cruising the strip for a new love to bunk with for the night, and his urges for material desires aren’t too difficult to purge but are in- creasingly difficult to control. O’Connell was enrolled in law school when he was cast in “The Defenders,”so he slipped into the role of an attorney with relative ease. He’s previously been spotted in various come- Stutzman MOTOR SALES , INC. 09 Chevrolet Malibu LT 4 dr., loaded, 4 cyl., heated leather seats, p. seats, CD, white, 31,000 mi. 09 Hyundai Elantra GLS 4 dr., loaded, 4 cyl., tilt, cruise, CD, silver, 30,000 mi. Joining her is Zoe Waters (Tanya Fischer),a fresh-faced, eager assistant with a sparkly personality. Although some critics have proclaimed that “The Defend- ers”is just another run-of-the- mill law drama, others have praised the chemistry between Belushi and O’Connell and have compared it to the dearly de- parted “Boston Legal.”And its helped, too,by Belushi,a veter- an of TV comedy. He’s starred in many a sitcom praised for its great writing and timing,hav- ing recently wrapped his show “According to Jim”after eight successful seasons.Of course, his family is no stranger to com- edy either — his late elder brother, John Belushi, was part of the legendary original cast of “Saturday Night Live”and starred in the cult favorite 1980 “Blues Brothers”film. The powerhouse comedian hails from “The Second City” troupe,an organization famous for finding legendary comics. Originally from Chicago,Belushi never passes up a chance to bring up his home roots in “The Defenders,”even making a joke about buying a ring for the Chicago Bears in the show. The CBS dramedy has caused a stir as one the best premiering shows of the season, putting it up alongside the year’s most revered new dramas such as “Hawaii Five-0,”“Undercov- ers”and “Blue Bloods.” The series is loosely based on two real-life attorneys who grew up in similar neighbor- hoods, moved to Vegas sepa- rately, and took on a practice to- gether. However, the writers took some dramatic liberties with their personal lives, since Glasses • Contacts • Eye Exams • Sunglasses EYEWEAR GALLERY SPECTRUM 56028 Parkway Ave., Suite E - Elkhart • 574-970-7444 EXPIRES NOVEMBER 30, 2010 50% OFF * COMPLETE David R.
