Relatable records Host says everyone’s a little bit country By Kyla Brewer TV Media O nce dismissed as “hill- billy music,”country is now bigger than ever. With raucous honky tonk,bawl- ing ballads and twang-infused pop, the genre has something for everyone, from oil tycoons and cowboys to average Joes and Janes struggling to pay the rent. It’s time for country music entertainers and fans to cele- brate as ABC presents “The 44th Annual CMA Awards”on Wednesday,Nov.10.Broadcast live from the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, the glittering awards ceremony features fresh faces and industry legends. For the third year in a row, Brad Paisley and Carrie Under- wood team up to co-host the highly anticipated Country Mu- sic Association event.Branded “country music’s biggest night,”the CMA Awards stand out for co-host Paisley be- cause of the potential to reach out to new audi- ences. “The CMAs are dif- ferent from any other awards night,”he explained.“Any new viewer will be pleasantly surprised at what they re- late to on the We Pay $$$ For Kids Stuff! For that reason alone, this is the most important night of the year for country music.” It’s a night for the industry to put its best foot forward, and that’s just what this year’s or- ganizers have done.Producers have lined up top-notch stars to perform between trophy hand- outs. Co-hosts Paisley and Under- wood do double duty once again as they both plan to per- form.Kenny Chesney was among the first round of per- formers announced, along with Dierks Bentley, Lady Ante- bellum and Blake Shelton. The Zac Brown Band is set to perform with CMA Awards veteran Alan Jackson, while Rascal Flatts,Sugarland, Taylor Swift and Keith Urban are also scheduled to hit the stage. In October, it was announced that Miranda Lambert would team up with Sheryl Crow to pay tribute to legendary singer/songwriter Loretta Lynn. A country music icon, Lynn is celebrating 50 years in the mu- sic business, and Lambert and Crow are slated to perform her signature song,“Coal Miner’s Daughter.” Reba McEntire and George Strait, two more country music icons, round out the list of per- formers. Many of the performers are also nominees this year. Lambert leads the list with a record-breaking nine nominations. She’s up for the award for entertain- er of the year,as well as best female vo- calist, album and song, making her the first female artist in CMA Award history to snag nine nominations in a sin- gle year. The record has only been outdone once by a male performer — Alan Jackson re- ceived 10 in 2002. However, Lambert could face an emotional roller-coaster dur- ing the ceremony,as she finds herself competing with her fi- ance, singer Blake Shelton, in three categories — best musical event, single and video.Shelton is also nominated in the male- vocalist category. With five CMA Award nomi- nations,Lady Antebellum has a good chance at taking home a statuette. The group is up for en- tertainer of the year, album of the year and single of the year, along with vocal group and video. Other notable nominees in- clude the Zac Brown Band, which snagged nods in both the entertainer and new-artists cate- gories. The last person to snag nominations in both was Ricky Skaggs in 1982. Interestingly, she’s up against Martina McBride and McEntire for female vocalist. If Under- wood wins, she’ll tie both McBride and McEntire for the most wins in this category (three each). When times are tough,as they are during this economic downturn, it appears people turn to country music to soothe the soul. That fact seems to be reflected in the number of new artists being welcomed into the fold. Fresh faces appear in 10 of the 12 categories.CMA rookies making their debuts include Eas- ton Corbin, Luke Bryan, Jerrod Niemann and Chris Young. Unlike popular-vote awards, the CMA Awards are determined by peers and industry profes- sionals. The Country Music Asso- ciation was founded in 1958 to promote country music, and to- day approximately 6,000 mem- bers have a say in the year’s nominees and winners. The in- ternational accounting firm of Deloitte & Touche LLP handles the ballots from the voting members. 2 The Goshen News • Viewer’s Choice • Saturday, November 6, 2010 - Friday, November 12, 2010 LLateaughs The Tonight Show: Jay Leno Rick Sanchez was fired after saying that Jews control the media on a satellite radio show. If he had said that on his show on CNN, he wouldn’t have gotten in trouble because no one would have heard it. We’re now in the longest, deepest recession since the Great Depression. To give you an idea of how long this has gone on, when this recession started, Lindsay Lohan was known for her acting. A story in the paper said that a picture of Lindsay Lohan in rehab would sell for $100,000. Today, police arrested a man with a camera who tried to force his way into the rehab facility to get the picture. His name is Michael Lohan. She has been in rehab so many times, the cafeteria has named a sandwich after her. Osama Bin Laden keeps releasing audio tapes to show that he’s still relevant. Really, audio tapes, relevant? How about an iPod download?! They say Osama Bin Laden keeps making these tapes to prove he’s still alive. That’s the same reason I keep doing this show.
