delta tau delta Brother Encourages Alumni Support— "We Can Do Better" Ben Pruitt '05 Gives to Chapter to Maintain Competitive Edge D elta Tau Delta at Butler University has been a home away from home to many men throughout the years, and that is no different for former chapter president Ben Pruitt '05. He joined Delta Tau Delta in an effort to get involved with a campus organization. His time in the Shelter helped him develop lifelong friendships and positively influenced the rest of his life. Ben graduated with degrees in anthropology and philosophy. He now works as a nurse practitioner in an emergency room and lives in Lancaster, Ohio, with his wife, Stephanie, and their two children, Adrienne and Elizabeth. Ben heard about A Commitment to Excellence: The Campaign for Beta Zeta and was inspired to contribute by all of the hard work from other alumni. "I want to help the Delts maintain their competitive edge. This is such an important part of my life, I want to help them to continue to attract quality men and to succeed," he said. Ben makes an effort to stay engaged with the chapter and with Beta Zeta brothers. He has been impressed with the progression of the chapter and hopes it will continue. "We are really building on everything from my time there. Community involvement and alumni outreach, with the e-mails and the newsletters, has been especially impressive." He hopes to inspire brothers who have not gotten involved with the campaign to reach out and help. "Ask questions. If you have any doubt, go to the Shelter and meet the members. Get back in touch. It might be difficult at first, but take a leap of faith because it will all be worth it in the end," he said. "Twenty or 30 years down the road we will be able to go back and say, 'I helped with this.'" Ben adds, "I'm proud of all of the news I've heard about Beta Zeta. And to the class of 2005: we can do better. Help ensure the future of Beta Zeta's success." Although Ben spends most of his time working and taking care of his family, he makes an effort to stay active by running, biking, and swimming. You can contact Ben via e-mail at ben.pruitt@gmail.com. Alumnus Invests in the Future of Beta Zeta Jerry Wiley '89 Is Grateful for Fraternal Experiences J erry Wiley '89 joined Delta Tau Delta because he was looking for an opportunity to grow and build relationships. His experience with Beta Zeta not only gave him that, but much more and ultimately made him the person he is today. "It helped me to mature, to learn to work and live with diversity, and to accept others ultimately," he said. After graduating with a degree in accounting, Jerry started work at an accounting firm and has since become a partner at Deloitte & Touche. DTD helped Jerry get his start in accounting because he looked up to many brothers in the field during his time at the Shelter. DTD also gave him a skill set that he will continue to use for the rest of his life. "Delta Tau Delta provided me with life skills, such as the spirits of collaboration, discipline, and cooperation," he said. "I learned that teams can pull together and paint walls, wash dishes, clean bathrooms—and while these Page 4 individual things aren't particularly pleasant— the overall impact is positive beyond the short commitment to these tasks." Jerry chose to participate in A Commitment to Excellence: The Campaign for Beta Zeta because he wanted to give back to the organization that has given him so much. "For me, it is about trying to give back a little bit of the positivity that I have taken from my experience as a Delt. I think it is a unique and awesome experience that should be shared." He hopes that the updated Shelter will provide future generations with the opportunity to enjoy the same experiences he did. As a guest lecturer in the College of Business and an avid basketball fan, Jerry visits campus regularly. He has been extremely impressed with the active chapter and is proud of its achievements and stability. "It is great to see the chapter To donate, please visit www.butlerdtd.org achieve at the highest levels again. I hope that my small contribution is part of a greater effort to make the Beta Zeta Chapter a campus and fraternity leader for a long time." Beta Zeta has continued to be a prominent feature in Jerry's life; he finds himself in almost constant contact with brothers. "There is a core group that spans six to eight years that has maintained a connection with each other over the years. We see each other at least annually and can always be counted on for support. It is a fantastic and uncommon environment." He encourages brothers who have lost touch to reconnect with the chapter because the relationships are worthwhile. Jerry lives in West Chester, Ohio, with his wife, Melissa, who still has his Delt pin. They have been married for almost 25 years and have two children in high school who are both looking to attend Butler. You can contact Jerry by e-mail at jerrywiley1175@gmail.com.
