According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, there are more than 18 hundred deer versus vehicle collisions a year in California. About 200 people nationwide are killed every year as a result of these types of collisions. Here are a few tips to keep in mind to avoid a collision with a deer: • Deer are most active at dawn and dusk, so be extra alert during these driving times. • Slow down in wooded areas. • Keep scanning the road in a side-to-side direction as deer move quickly and can be out in front of you before you know it. • Deer typically roam in groups, so be on the lookout for more than one. • If a collision is imminent, brake firmly and attempt to stop. Do not swerve if you can help it, as this might put you in the path of oncoming traffic. • Use high beam lights at night to illuminate areas from which deer could enter the road. If you hit a deer, note the location and call 9-1-1. Do not stop to touch or help the animal as it may still be alive and can injure you. You may call Caltrans at (530) 225-3426 or the California Highway Patrol to report the collision if it occurred on a state highway or interstate. If inside city or county limits, contact your local agencies.
