DESERT MESSENGER IS A PROUD MEMBER OF Trying to squash a rumor is like trying to unring a bell. ~Shana Alexander wonder, excitement, children and adults having fun and.... rumors. Oh, how they sprout and grow and grow and grow. Recently, I’ve been on the receiving end Halloween in Quartzsite was full of spread around town regarding the vendor permits fees. The price for a vendor per- mit is still $50. However, it will only be valid for 180 days, with a 30- day exten- tion available for $15. Quartzsite codes have stated that a temporary structure, such as a vendor tent, is allowed for only 6 months. Now the two parts of the codes match. There are very few vendors that stay year-round that would actually be affected by this change, which goes into effect around Nov. 26, 2010. The majority of vendors stay under 6 months. When approached by someone ranting and raving about how bad Quartzsite is treating the vendors, please take a minute to find out the facts before passing on misinformation. The Town of Quartzsite website has the correct information. There you will find all the correct details. Call them at 928- 927-4333 with any questions. Council also approved a Special Event vendor permit for only $15! This creates more possibilities for weekend events! Another issue of rumor control is what actually happens during the Quartzsite of some of those rumors. In the Oct. 20th issue of the Desert Messenger, I omitted two paid ads, along with a very important annoucement about the Halloween Fes- tival. Boy, did I hear about that! I apologize for any inconvience that may have caused the community. Sometimes things fall through the cracks when you’re up against the deadline and your computer decides to do something other that what you tell it! Recently, some other rumors have been N 3, 2010 Editorial BY SHANANA “RAIN” GOLDEN-BEAR Town Council meetings. During the sum- mer, many things took place that were important. If you missed the meeting where the council censured the mayor, the full videos are available for view- ing on the Internet. Ms. Starr BearCat, photographer, has recently placed the most current videos on youtube. So when someone says “He said, She said” now you can watch for yourself and find out the truth. Recent videos include the Oct. 26th meeting where Mayor Ed Foster denied the public to speak during “Reports and Announcements” as well as during the “Communications/Petitions & Citizen Comments”. To be included on the agenda, any about sitting in council. The circle is a universal symbol for unity and whole- ness and this form of meeting in circle is ancient. We all have memories of sitting around the campfire. Sitting in a circle builds trust, self-value, deep communica- tion, and connection. We see each other as equals. We respect the speaker, sitting in silence until our time to speak. When sitting together in circle, there is no place for rumors, for everyone can see who is talking. Today, our society is focused on linear meetings, keeping form and “control”. The Internet creates a much faster way of communicating. When reading information online, can you see their face? Do you know who is speaking? Are the words based on fact? Can the words be verified? Rumors cause harm. Please don’t pass them along! Wed. & Sat.
