8B – Daily News – Monday, November 1, 2010 WORLD BRIEFING Obama campaigns in Ohio, Palin says he ’blew it’ in 2 years CLEVELAND (AP) — President Barack Obama made Ohio his final campaign stop Sun- day in the tumultuous midterm elections, trying to help hard-pressed Democrats in a state that could prove crucial to his fortunes in two years. Republicans said it was too little and too late, confident their party will pick up more than 40 House seats and regain the majority they lost four years ago. Republican control of the Senate seems less likely, although they expect to gain several seats there, as well as numerous gover- nors’ seats. Obama, bracing for perhaps one of the biggest midterm setbacks in recent times, made a four- state weekend sprint to help embattled Democrats as best he can. He said their chances are good if their supporters turn out heavily on Tuesday. But Sarah Palin, the 2008 GOP vice presiden- tial nominee, predicted voters will send a sober- ing message: ‘‘You blew it, President Obama. We gave you the two years to fulfill your promise of making sure that our economy starts roaring back to life again.’’ Favorite Veteran and send Christmas to our Troops! We’ll run your Veteran’s photo and service info on Salute your As he did in three other states this weekend, the president implored voters in Ohio to recall how poorly the Republicans handled the economy when they were in con- trol, and to give Democ- rats more time. Bomb plot narrowly averted WASHINGTON (AP) — The mail bomb plot stretching from Yemen to Chicago may have been aimed at blowing up planes in flight and was only narrowly averted, officials said Sunday, acknowledging that one device almost slipped through Britain and another seized in Dubai was unwittingly flown on two passenger jets. Senior U.S. officials met to develop a U.S. response to the al-Qaida faction linked to the pow- erful explosives addressed to synagogues in Chica- go. Yemeni authorities hunted suspects linked to the group, but released a female computer engi- neering student arrested Saturday, saying someone else had posed as her in signing the shipping doc- uments. It’s really pretty much up to President Barack Obama. Despite the punish- ment his fellow Democ- rats are expected to take from voters, Obama has shown no sign of retreat- ing from his insistence that families and small businesses with incomes above $250,000 return to higher, Bill Clinton-era tax levels starting Jan. 1. But Obama also has dodged the question whether he would veto a bill that extends the tax cuts for everyone. The expiring tax cuts were enacted in 2001. They include lower income tax rates, a $1,000 per-child tax credit, relief for married couples, and MELODIE POISSON for Corning City Council VOTE Christopher Speer. Mili- tary prosecutors said it was no routine battlefield killing because the Cana- dian was not a legitimate soldier, but an al-Qaida fighter. Speer’s widow, Tabitha, pumped her fist and cheered ‘‘yes!’’ when the jury announced its 40- year sentence. Then she burst into tears. lower taxes on invest- ments and large estates. Guantanamo jury: child soldier should get 40 years GUANTANAMO BAY NAVAL BASE, Cuba (AP) — A former teenage al-Qaida fighter was sentenced Sunday to eight more years in cus- tody under the terms of a plea agreement unsealed after a military sentencing jury said he should serve 40 years for war crimes. Omar Khadr looked straight ahead as a mili- tary judge imposed the eight-year sentence, end- ing a legal odyssey that began when the Canadian son of a major al-Qaida figure was captured — at age 15 — with severe wounds in Afghanistan in 2002 after a four-hour firefight. Main St. Tractor Supply Center Senior Cuts Labeling birth control could make contraception free for US women WASHINGTON (AP) — Fifty years after the pill, another birth control revolution may be on the horizon: free contracep- tion for women in the U.S., thanks to the new health care law. That could start a shift toward more reliable — and expensive — forms of birth control that are gaining acceptance in other developed coun- tries. But first, look for a fight over social mores. A panel of experts advising the government meets in November to begin considering what kind of preventive care for women should be covered at no cost to the patient, as required under President Barack Obama’s overhaul. Sen. Barbara Mikuls- ki, D-Md., author of the women’s health amend- ment, says the clear intent was to include family planning.
