Saturday, October 30, 2010 – Daily News – 3B Religion Faith&Worship Church news Sunday sing-a-long Stan Kolbert Pastor of First Southern Baptist Church, 585 Kimball Road, in Red Bluff would like to invite every- one out to 5th Sunday Sing-a-long at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 31. Scottish celebration There will be lot of fellowship, singing and finger food following the music. For more information call David 200- 1894 or 527-5083. Annual Kirkin’ o’ the Tartan Service and Jefferson Pipe Band to be featured in Scottish Celebration The annual Kirkin’ o’ the Tartans worship service will be held on 11 a.m. Sundayat the Presbyterian Church of Red Bluff. Authentic bagpipe and drum music, played by the Jefferson Pipe Band, will honor the denomination’s Scottish faith traditions. Scottish pipe hymns will be played through- out the service, as well as a blessing of individuals and fam- ilies of Scottish descent. After the service, traditional Celtic pipe hymns and melodies will be performed along with refreshments during the coffee hour consisting of Scottish shortbread, fruits, coffee and punch. The Presbyterian Church is located at 838 Jefferson St., on the corner of Jefferson and Hickory. For information, contact Presbyterian Church at 527- 0372. Folks 'with mud on their shoes' feel right at home at Open Range Fellowship KANSAS CITY, Mo. (MCT) — It's called a cowboy church, but you don't have to ride horses — or even like church — to attend. People who come consider themselves outsiders to the stained-glass window churches, and many live by the old Western tune "Don't Fence Me In." About 120 meet Saturday nights in a barn in rural Lone Jack, in Jackson County, Mo. Many wear jeans, cowboy hats, boots, overalls, flannel shirts, leather and biker jackets. The walls of the barn are decorated with wagon wheels, reins, stirrups, saddles and boots. Mostly trucks and a few motorcycles are parked outside as a couple of dogs roam the grounds. Open Range Fellowship, led by co-pastors Dave Put- thoff, 49, and Frank Slaughter, 55, has been going weekly for two years at Ransomed Heart Ranch. Following Bible study and a potluck dinner Saturday, a praise band with a country beat starts up, summoning peo- ple to the service. A large flag is mounted on the wall behind them, and a wooden cross is on the podium in front. Worshippers are on their feet, moving to the music, clap- ping, swaying their arms in the air and singing the words that appear on two large screens that also depict horses and country settings. Slaughter preaches, using analogies most in the audience can relate to: God wants his followers to be so in tune to him that he can direct them with loose reins, Slaughter says. Fearful people hold on with tight reins. At one point a video shows a cowboy riding his horse without any reins. They circle an arena, gallop, come to a sudden stop, make circles and continue on their way. "That's really how God wants us to be," Slaughter says. The Call is the real deal I attended The Call in Sacramen- to over Labor Day Weekend and was astonished at the wonders released there – and at the fiction that surrounded them. The Sacra- mento Bee covered the event and produced a six paragraph article claiming the event was about an agenda to protest what event orga- nizer Lou Engle allegedly called the "rampant immorality of the nation." In fact, Engle made no such state- ments. Not one of the speakers over a twelve hour period accused the nation of immorality. Instead a heartfelt plea was echoed repeated- ly for the Church Herself to turn away from immorality – in terms of personal sin on the part of individ- ual Christians and the corporate sin of failing to boldly offer alterna- tives to the culture of death in which we Christians have all too often been complicit. Yes, when event leaders speak of a culture of death versus a culture of life they are indeed talking about the 52 million deaths of unborn children – a holocaust in itself – and the ongoing trauma that trainwrecks the lives of so many of the men and women who have participated in taking those lives. But there is much more than a commitment to the unborn in a culture of life defined as that culture which favors sequential and escalating choices for the abundant life Jesus claimed as His reason for coming into the world. Conversely, the sad history of humanity features so many choices against that life that it is fair to speak of a culture of death creat- ed by our defiance. But the mes- sage of the day was that the Church needs to hold itself responsible for this state of affairs rather than point fingers at others. There were threats of massive demonstrations by gay rights activists looming over the day. I Should faith groups get involved in issues like health insurance and immi- gration? IMPORTANT CALL- ING FOR CHRISTIANS The Rev. Justin Hoye, pastor of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Nevada, Mo. and St. Bridget's in Rich Hill, Mo.: While many religious groups would sug- was part of a small team that walked and prayed over the mall the Friday Night before The Call. Our prayer walk followed several meet- ings for prayer inside the Capitol building that day – and sev- eral groups of people prayed inside the building on Saturday as well. What did they pray for? They asked God’s peace to descend on the capitol and its surrounding city. They asked that all – gay, straight, and every other constituency in town – be blessed and filled with that peace that passes all under- standing. My team felt that peace descend as we walked in the lingering heat of Friday Evening. It when it should be clear that the announcement was prepared some time in advance of when we began praying. But the Craigslist capitu- lation on this issue does come clear- ly in the wake of thou- sands of Christians pray- ing for moved hearts in this arena and a little extra enthusiasm poured out on a primed crowd is forgivable. More sobering was Jim never lifted off all day on Saturday and there were no demonstrations of any kind either. (The Bee photographer managed to photograph one sign accusing Christians of hate; I walked the perimeter myself much of the day and never saw even that one.) Even the weather cooperated – tempera- tures were much cooler than fore- cast – and we thanked the God to Whom we prayed for that too. The thousands who attended The Call spent their day worshipping God and re-committing their lives to Him in peace – albeit enthusias- tically – and without judging any- one. I am proud to be numbered among them. Wilson GodTalk revelation that black pregnancies ending in abortion are now in a 1- 1.23 ratio against live births coupled with the reality that two thirds of all Planned Parenthood facilities are located in black communities that comprise about twelve per cent of the popula- tion. Can anyone doubt that an eth- nic group is being targeted with sta- tistics like that? But once again the message was that if we Christians are behaving as the salt and light we are called to be – as opposed to looking as much like the world as it resembles itself – these horrors will resolve in favor of the culture of life for which Jesus and countless mar- tyrs have given their lives. This crowd left Sacramento filled with a new resolution to become that salt and light – not politically but spiri- tually. And again I must say that I am proud to be numbered among them. There were a couple of announcements I would call over the top, such as the statement that the Craigslist commitment to remove all adult content from their sites came a mere two hours after we began praying for an end to sex trafficking in the United States. The inference was that our prayers had somehow tipped the balance gest that their primary intent is to focus an individual's attention on spiritual reali- ties —often realities to be fully realized only after death — that focus does not negate attention to the phys- ical realities of this life. A Christian view asserts that God, in the person of Jesus Christ, entered our human condition in solidar- ity with the plight of Jim Wilson has been an ordained Anglican priest for the past quarter century. With his wife, Diana, they lead PrayNorthState and produce PrayNorthState Radio and Genesis Generation Radio, heard on KBLF Red Bluff AM 1490 on Saturdays at 8 a.m. and Sundays at 6 p.m. respectively. Mixing faith and issues like health insurance, immigration? (MCT) Voices of Faith: humanity. Though like us in all things but sin, Jesus bore the weight of the burdens in life that come from sin: loss, grief, suffering and illness, brokenness and betrayal. With that in mind, partic- ipating in the concerns of life that affect our human condition, like health insur- ance and immigration, is appropriate for a faith com- munity.
