To show their gratitude to the fire fighters, Red Bluff decided to run a play that would honor their gracious hosts — the hook-and-ladder. “We just kept telling the kids that they have to just keep pounding it and pounding it. Eventually, we knew that we’d be victorious.” Red Bluff Spartans Coach John Miller The Spartans executed it with four seconds remaining in the first half, getting the ball into the hands of Ian Hill for a spectacular 60-yard touch- down, which ultimately sparked a 27-7 victory over Oroville on Friday night at Harrison Stadium. “The fire department stepped out of their way this year and done everything we’ve asked,” said Red Bluff coach John Miller, who led the Spartans to their first victory of the year. “They’ve really stepped above and beyond. That’s what’s it’s all about, getting that spark, getting going. It really ignited us. ... Hill’s an incredible player. We wanted to highlight him and his speed.” And the hook-and-ladder did just that, giving Red Bluff an 8-7 lead heading into the half after Hill ran in a success- ful 2-point conversion follow- ing the touchdown. Yet as it turned out, Hill never expected to actually run the play before- hand. “We just started practicing it this week and didn’t think we’d get a chance to use it, but the opportunity came,” said Hill. “I heard the (Oroville) See WIN, page 2B Corning rolls by Central Valley Tehama Tracker VOLLEYBALL Anderson 16 7 20 Corning 25 25 25 Corning seniors Corina Boone, Jessica DuBois, Courtney Finch, Brittney Garrett, Catherine Kinkle, Kelsey Nooner made the most of Senior Night with a three-game sweep of visiting Anderson. “Our passing was the best it has been all year,” coach Mike Albee said. Following a McIntyre fumble, the FOOTBALL Central Valley 12 Corning 44 By RICHGREENE DN Sports Editor CORNING— The Cardinals did what they do best, Friday night, pound- ing the ball into the opposing defense until it broke. Then lining up and doing it again. Corning breezed by Central Valley 44-12 on a muddy field that fit in per- fect with the Cardinals ground game. The Cardinals rolled off touchdown runs of 75, 62, 54 and 48 yards as they gained 434 yards on the ground on Senior Night. Senior Tyler McIntyre kept up his frenzied touchdown pace with three more scores to bring his October total to 14 on his way to 162 rushing yards. McIntyre’s second touchdown, on a fourth and goal play at the 2-yard line, ended with the senior diving into a large puddle of water in the end zone. “The splash was pretty fun,” McIn- tyre said, who credited getting healthy again to his recent performances. Senior running mate Cameron Nye finished with 111 yards on the ground after a 75-yard touchdown run. Senior Devan Whitlock made the most of his three carries, scoring twice from 62 and 54 yards out to rack up 114 yards. Equally as impressive as the offense was the Corning defense led by a three- sack performance by David Collins and strong play by Roy Madrigal and Erik Miranda. Cameron Nye and Ezekiel Rodriguez each had interceptions. In the third quarter the Cardinals defense stuffed Central Valley on two tries from the 1-yard line. On third down a perfectly timed blitz stuffed Central Valley quarterback Kody Corbell on a sneak. On fourth down Collins and Ryan Henderson met running back Johnny Saephan in the backfield for a loss. Falcons threatened again minutes later when they took over possession at the Corning 17-yard line. Again the defense was ready. Collins and McIntyre had back-to- back sacks of Corbell before a Falcons false start drove Central Valley back- wards on three consecutive plays. Cor- bell’s third down pass attempt was incomplete and following a punt, Corning had managed to net a yard fol- lowing the fumble. Down 30-0 Central Valley finally scored on a Jared Dressel to Saephan 12-yard pass. Whitlock answered on Corning’s next play with a 62-yard touchdown run. Saephan returned the ensuing kick- off 85 yards for the Falcons’ other score. Corning wrapped up Northern Ath- letic League play at 3-1 and improved to 7-2 on the season. Spartans soar past Paradise on Senior Night SOCCER winning their own goal kicks. Paradise 1 Red Bluff 4 By RICH GREENE DN Sports Editor With their parents in their hearts, the Spartans breezed past Paradise 4-1, Friday on Senior Night. Before the game, Red Bluff’s 11 seniors paid tribute to their parents and then took to the field determined to leave their high school careers at Spartan Stadium on a high note. It didn’t take long for Red Bluff to make that statement on the score- board. In the fourth minute senior forward Skylar Garcia put the Spartans up 1-0. Daily News photo by Rich Greene Red Bluff’s Enrique Ascencio gets past a pair of defenders, Friday. Red Bluff continued with heavy pressure on the Paradise net as the Bobcats had difficulty In the 20th minute, the Spartans struck again when Daniel Gonzalez beat Paradise’s goalie in the air on a ball that sprung to life on the Spar- tan Stadium turf. Gonzalez then took the ball past a pair of defend- ers and into the net for a 2-0 Red Bluff lead. Paradise got on the board just before halftime in the 38th minute when a through ball sprung Zach Saylors for a one-on-one chance with Red Bluff’s senior goalie Carlos Men- doza. Red Bluff wasn’t deterred and continued to maintain possession for most of the second half. In the 57th minute Gonzalez earned a free kick from 30 yards out. Senior Enrique Ascen- cio placed a perfect cross into the box that Gonzalez headed into the net for a 3-1 lead. Red Bluff continued to press for more goals and in the 66th minute senior Cody Yarbrough dribbled into space and fired a shot into the back of the net for Red Bluff’s fourth goal of the game. The Spartans started slowly this season, but in the closing weeks of the season have come on strong with a pair of wins and tying an Enterprise team, undefeated in league play. The Spartans group of 11 seniors who have played together since freshmen are: Enrique Ascencio, Skylar Garcia, David Gonzalez, Mario Gonzalez, Cullen Groom, Fredy Herrera, Carlos Mendoza, Richard Penne, Eddie Quezada, Rogelio Velaquez and Cody Yarbrough. The team also featured senior foreign exchange student Martin Hlinka.
