AVC President Plans Alumni
Organization, Mentor Program
Lynn Butler '88 Prepares for Texas Alpha's Future
W
elcome to my first article as the president of the Alumni Volunteer
Council (AVC). Some of you may already know me. I joined Texas
Alpha in the fall of 1984. I lived in the house for three of four years and
served as state rush captain, vice president and dishwasher. From 1999 to
around 2008 or so, I served as the chapter counselor. After a short fiveyear sabbatical, I was recruited (or forced or bribed) to come back to the
AVC by our very own Mark Kiester '71.
Over the last year, I've had the pleasure of re-engaging with both the
active chapter and the local alumni. I can't express how impressed I am
with the active members. They are a smart, personable, motivated, and
(from an objective viewpoint) good-looking bunch of young men. We
should all be proud of the chapter, alumni and actives alike. As I tell the
incoming freshmen, Texas Alpha is a special place. They will grow with
their brothers together. As I tell them, "Look around you–these young men
will be with you for the rest of your life. You will grow and study and
date and have fun together. You will laugh together and cry together. You
will be there for each other's first jobs, weddings and the births of your
children. You will work and vacation together with each other's families.
You will be there to bury each other's parents and, ultimately, to bury each
other. Treasure this time together. Few get this chance."
My goals over the next year are two-fold. One, I hope to get the alumni
chapter better organized and in communication with each other. We are
now a recognized alumni organization with the Texas Exes. Soon we
will have an alumni Facebook page open to better communicate to the
brotherhood. Two, I want to better develop a mentor program for our
graduating seniors. We have the chance to help these young men get
started with the next phase of their lives. They get great training at UT
and Texas Alpha but desire the help of the alumni in getting their careers
started.
To the extent that any of you are interested, please do not hesitate to
contact me. In the meantime, come visit us at the house. Life is good there.
HFF,
Lynn Butler '88
