VOLLEYBALL Chester 25 25 25 Mercy 17 12 23 By RICHGREENE DN Sports Editor By the time the Lady Warriors got into rhythm, Tuesday night, they had already buried themselves into too large of a hole to climb out of, as the visiting Chester Volcanoes swept Mercy in three games. Chester improved to 8-2 in the Tri- Cities League, while Mercy dropped to 2-7 and 6-24-1 overall on the season. It was a slow start for the Lady War- riors, as Chester raced out to a 6-0 lead in Game 1 behind the service of Natal- ie Petersen. Down 21-11, Mercy finally started to show some life with Diana Van Ert serving. Camille Crowley made an intelli- gent play at the net and Maggie Keller’s hitting presence started to show as the Warriors climbed back into the game with five straight points. However, the early hole was too much to overcome as Chester claimed Game 1 25-17. Game 2 saw Mercy spot Chester an early 10-3 lead as Bailey Smith had a pair of aces for the Volcanoes. The Lady Warriors never got going in the second game, which was fin- ished by two straight Casey Delay kills. Poor service by both teams kept the opening of Game 3 closer for Mercy as the game started with eight consecutive A couple of blocks at the net by Claire Bryant and Kaylene Dyer helped Chester separate themselves in the late going as they opened up a 22- 13 lead. Mercy fought back to 22-19 with their best stretch of the match as Alex McFadyen produced five straight ser- vice points. After a Keller bump just missed the sideline, Chester sat on match point at 24-19. Again Mercy fought back with strong attacking from Van Ert and quality serves from Jennifer Gentry. Mercy forced a pair of Chester time outs as they closed to within 24-23. But that’s as close as the comeback would get as Chester came out of their second time out and delivered the final kill shot to win 25-23. Heat falls to Celtics Miami 88 Boston 80 BOSTON (AP) — LeBron James was a rare bright spot for Miami with 31 points as the new Big 3 fell in its debut to the old Big 3 of the Boston Celtics, 88-80, before a loud crowd that shouted ‘‘overrated!’’ at the Heat on Tuesday night. Boston led 45-30 at halftime, but Miami cut that to 63-57 after the third quarter behind James’ 15 points in that period. A layup by James made it 83-80 with 1:10 left in the game. But Boston, which once led by 19, got the last five points on a 3-pointer by Ray Allen and two free throws by Paul Pierce. The other members off Miami’s trio struggled, with Dwyane Wade scoring 13 points and Chris Bosh adding eight points and eight rebounds. Wednesday October 27, 2010
