1B Sports Tuesday October 1, 2013 Enterprise hands Corning shuts out Willows Red Bluff first loss of season By RICH GREENE DN Staff Writer Coaches often tell their players the scoreboard didn't reflect the game played on the field. Red Bluff coach Corey Hein told his Spartans that Friday night. Despite the scoreboard showing a 40-0 Enterprise win, Hein wasn't lying. If there's such a thing as a 40-0 game that came down to a handful of plays, this was it. It's just all of those plays went 4-0 Enterprise's way – and they all went for touchdowns. "You break down the first half to four long pass plays," Hein said. "Neither team was really able to drive the ball real well." The Spartans hung with the Northern Section's top team in the trenches and held a fast paced rushing attack more than in check. Red Bluff's problems came with blown coverages in the secondary and Enterprise quarterback Bobby Luken never missed a chance to make the Spartans pay. Luken threw for five touchdowns, albeit one might be considered more of a backwards lateral on further review. He completed 14-of-22 passes for 259 yards. Red Bluff's defense showed it had the potential to stop the Hornets offense on their first drive, but a pass interference call and encroachment penalty helped Enterprise avoid an early 3-and-out. On third-and-5 at Red Bluff's 45 Enterprise's Izzy Perea slipped past the Red Bluff defense and Luken found him without a Spartan defender within 10 yards of him for a touchdown. Enterprise hit another big play on their next drive when Alex Talladino slipped through Red Bluff's deep coverage up the middle on a 40-yard touchdown reception. Red Bluff's defense forced Enterprise backwards 11 yards on their next possession highlighted by a Justin Nunez sack of Luken. But the Spartans defense would crack again late in the second quarter. Enterprise faced a third-and-15 at Red Bluff's 28, when Luken rolled right, bought time and found Jordan Deppe uncovered in the end zone for a 20-0 lead. The Hornets tacked on the back breaker before half following a Red Bluff three-and-out. This time Luken hit Perea on a screen pass and the Enterprise junior took it to the house from 57 yards out and a 28-0 Hornets lead at halftime. Red Bluff's defense held Enterprise on its first two possessions of the second half, before the Hornets grounded out a 51-yard scoring drive capped by Luken finding Nick Tomasin on a fourth-and-goal play from the 4. Isaiah Matthews capped the scoring with a 47-yard touchdown run. Hein said the coverage mistakes were a combination of not getting their plays into the defense on time as well as inexperience. "We were just killing it on the line of scrimmage," he said. "We just made some mistakes in the secondary – just coverage areas. We're just green there. We got a lot of guys who didn't get to play a lot of time last year." This was the second year in a row Red Bluff came into the Enterprise game 3-0. And the second year the Hornets handed them an ugly loss on the scoreboard. Last year the Hornets won 50-7 in Redding. It took the 2012 two more losses before bouncing back into the win column, they'll hope to avoid that this year as they head to Shasta next week. They'll likely have to find their offense again. Greg Dufour was held to 7-for-20 passing for 47 yards. Although he led the team in rushing with nine carries for 50 yards. More importantly he showed a lot of leadership and heart in taking a beating from a barrage of outside blitzes and hits when he tucked and took it up the middle. Kade Lewis got one drive under center late in the game and completed a 24-yard pass to Joseph Bosetti.. For the first time this season Jared Poore was held without a touchdown reception. He did catch three passes for 40 yards. Chase Root caught two receptions and Austin Torres and Christian Shaffer each had a reception. A week after carrying the Spartans on his back in the Tehama County Shootout, Shaffer ran just six times for 20 yards, his largest gain coming on a botched punt. Michael Stone carried four times for no yards and Daniel Koenig was stopped at the line on his two carries. Perea finished with six receptions for 145 yards and one carry for nine yards. Matthews led the Hornets rushing attack with 91 yards on 13 carries, most of that coming on the late touchdown run. Cardinals score 20 points in second half By ANDRE BYIK DN Sports Editor WILLOWS — Corning High's Alex Davila rushed for two second-half touchdowns, David Edson added one of his own and the Cardinals surged on the road Friday to shut out the Willows Honkers, 20-0. The Cards improved to 3-1 on the season as they enter league play next week, but the question of whether they would drop two straight games for the first time this year lingered during the first half against the Honkers (2-2), the defending Northern Section Division III champions. Seemingly unable to solve the Willows defense early, possession after possession resulted in either a turnover on downs or a punt for Corning. To be sure, Corning's defense gave left he Honkers trying to solve the same problem. Corning's best shot to beak the scoreless first-half tie came early in the second quarter, when the Cards marched into Willows territory with the help of quarterback Chayce Maday and Josh Shults. But with a first-and-goal on the Willows 5-yard line, the Honkers held the Cards in check, stopping four running plays and forcing a turnover on downs on their own 8-yard line. The teams would go to the half tied at 0 apiece. The start of the third quarter, however, brought with it an ener- gized Corning squad. The Cards forced a Willows three and out, and on their first possession put together a sixplay touchdown sequence that saw Davila find the openings he was searching for during the first half. He broke for a 30-yard run from the Willows 38-yard line, and then punched in an 8-yard touchdown run to give Corning a lead it wouldn't give up with 8:54 left in the third. "I gotta give it to my line for everything," Davila said. "They set the holes and I just run through them. I gotta give it to them for everything." Up 7-0, Cards defensive back Alex Wunsch intercepted a long pass over the middle of the field thrown by Honkers quarterback Greg Dicharry on the subsequent possession, giving Corning good field position at their own 40. It took just two plays for the Cards to strike again as the 6foot-0 Davila ran for a 53-yard touchdown down the left sideline with 6:40 left in the third. "(Davila) is getting better," Studer said. "He's still young, he's still a sophomore for us and he's starting to realize he has both power and speed." Corning coach John Studer said he wished he could pinpoint the reason for his team's lethargic first-half performance, and added that part of it may have had to do with it being the Cards' first road game on the season. "We just came out in the first half and honestly (the Honkers) lined up in what we thought they'd be lined up in defensively and we just couldn't really execute anything," he said. With two-way player Chance Nelson recovering from an injury suffered against Red Bluff in the Tehama County Shootout, Corning was playing a bit shorthanded on Friday. Nelson has emerged as a boon on offense and defense for the Cards this season. "The defense was spectacular," Studer said. "It was a real skeleton crew, losing (Aiden) Nye and Nelson. We lost another guy in the middle of the week who was a starter on defense, and coach (Bob) Hall was really working his tail off trying to patch things together." That patchwork defense didn't allow the Honkers within the Cards' 20-yard line all night, and delivered the team's first shut out victory on the season as well. Corning High's David Edson ran in a 15-yard touchdown with 4:30 remaining in the game. Jayve Uriostegui was 2 of 3 on point after touchdown attempts. Davila finished with 111 rushing yards, Edson finished with 126 yards on the ground. The Cards open league play at Lassen on Friday. --------Sports Editor Andre Byik can be reached at 527-2151, ext. 111 or at sports@redbluffdailynews.com.
