8A – Daily News – Monday, October 18, 2010 Vitality & health Q&A on flu season (MCT) — What you'll need to know to protect yourself from the flu this season: Who should get the vaccine? The Center for Disease Control is recommending that everyone over 6 months of age receive the flu vaccine. When should you get the flu vaccine? As soon as you can. Conven- tional wisdom has been that Octo- ber is the ideal time to get the vac- cine. The season peaks in Febru- ary, so you should definitely get it before then. The immunization takes up to 10 days to take effect, and is effective for about six months. Where can you get the vac- cine? Your doctor should have it available now. Pharmacies have been offering it since August. For the first time this year, pharma- cists have been eligible to admin- ister the vaccine, but only to peo- ple 18 years and older. Anyone younger has to go to a doctor or otherwise qualified health profes- sional for a shot. How much does a vaccination Barber Shop $ Cheers 600 Open 6 days 570-2304 259 S. Main St. Tractor Supply Center Senior Cuts cost? Prices are ranging from $20 to $38. Many insurance plans will cover the cost. In what form does the vaccina- tion come? In three forms. Standard vacci- nation comes as a shot, made from a killed virus, which is rec- ommended for the general popu- lation. There is also a high con- centration form of that vaccine, recommended for people 65 and older. Can you get the flu from the vaccine? No. You often hear people say they've gotten the flu right after getting the shot. That's probably because they were either coming down with it when the shot was administered, or it's a reaction of their immune system. Myalgia and low-grade fever do occur as a reaction in some people, says Dr. Robert Lyons of St. Francis Hos- pital, but it's brief, and, compared to the flu, very mild. Such reactions are more com- mon with the nasal spray than with the shot, because it's made with a live weakened virus, but 22755 Antelope Blvd. Red Bluff, CA 96080 (530) 527-9166 this also will not give you the flu. Does the vaccine contain thimerosol? Yes. Although some have claimed a link between thimerosol and autism, health experts have consistently said there is no evidence of any con- nection. How many shots will you need? Because the vaccine covers the three most common strains circu- lating _ H1N1, H2N3 and Influenza B _ most people will need only one. The CDC recom- mends that children ages 9 and under who are getting the shot for the first time this year receive two doses, administered within 30 days of each other. Who in particular should get it? Pregnant women, children younger than 5, anyone with chronic ailments and anyone who cares for those at higher risk of infection. Who should not get it? Because the vaccine is made in eggs, anyone allergic to eggs should not receive the vaccine.
