In the beginning, as we were getting to know each other, I was OK with being herded to the back of coach as I worked hard to gain favor with you. I was committed to loyalty. The day that I reached 25,000 frequent flier miles was a big deal for me. Wow. A free trip. But I wanted more. I wanted 50,000 miles for two free round-trip tick- ets. So I persevered. I flew and flew and flew. And finally, I made it. And you came through, just as promised. My husband and I loved that vacation in New England with free airfare and all. I was hooked. I made sure that all of my trips were booked on AA. You loved that, didn't you! Over the years, we have logged nearly 1.5 million miles together. In fact, I am known in some circles as Miss American Airlines. And I thank you for my lifetime elite sta- tus. But things have changed. I haven't seen an upgrade to first class in what seems like years. I notice you are booking the flights to full; there is not an open seat any- where. I was one of your fans who enjoyed the food service in coach. It was edible and often quite good. When you discontin- ued that, I lived with nuts and pretzels for several years. Where have all the snacks gone? Oh, yeah. You now charge $6 for those nuts. And something like $12 for a stale sandwich. No thanks. And $8 for a pil- low and blanket? Oy. I do need to talk to you about baggage, and I'm not talking about childhood experiences that color my adult life. I'm talking about Sam- sonite, or in my case Kirkland. Though I appreciate your not charging me for checked luggage now that I am Mary Hunt lifetime elite, what on earth are you doing charging others $25 per bag? Yikes! Have you considered using that money to perhaps improve the baggage service? As you know, my husband and I recently enjoyed a vacation in South Carolina on frequent-flier- mile tickets. We arrived, but our luggage didn't. L-O-S-T two bags, the sum total of everything we had brought with us. You told us the Everyday Cheapskate next flight in would be 24 hours hence, but we would be too far away for your delivery service. WHAT?!? Obviously, you forgot who I am. Million miler ... loyal flier ... Miss American Air- lines. Imagine spending your first day of vacation with nothing more than the clothes in which you arrived. Yes, you found our bags and you delivered them outside of your delivery area, but only after I whined and carried on about being so put out. I don't mourn so much for myself, because despite all the downgrading you've done, I retain my lifetime elite status. But I have to warn you that my eyes have been wandering. In a few weeks, I'll be flying to Massachusetts. On Delta. Beastup Fight Team cleans up in Orland Bill Handel and I took our humble little fight team to compete at the Orland Grappling Tournament. It was our team's first tournament, and we really didn't know what to expect. We were fortunate enough to get sponsor- ship from Robert Waelty- he made shirts for all of us with his fight wear logo — Beastup Fight Wear. I'd have to say we were the best dressed team, but they don't give out prizes for that. To say I was nervous would be an understatement. There were grapplers from Team Quest and Redding Sub- missions and, of course, John Orsua's fight team. Not to mention some independent fighters. There were lots of skilled and experienced grapplers. I'd also noticed that there were no other females competing for my girl, Jessica Richards. She worked hard to make weight, though, and was going to compete regardless. Bill asked John Orsua, who put the tournament on, if 2 of our youngest guys could do an exhibition match against each other. They'd been train- ing so hard, and both wanted a chance to show off their skills. John did one better- he gave them 3 chances to compete against each other, just like the big boys. Mateo Gonzalez and Alex Lankins, 9 and 10 years old, grappled three times for the crowd. They showed some great takedowns, escapes, chokes and arm bars. Alex won all three matches. First up was my 205 pounder, Thomas Ballard. He stepped onto the mat and gained the fastest submis- sion of the tournament with a beautiful guillotine choke. His next match went pretty much the same way. His final match took a bit longer, and he finished that one with an arm bar. Next, Jesse Foss, my 185 pounder won three of his matches as well. The first with a choke, the second with an ankle lock and the third by decision. He lost his 4th match, but he still won for his division with the majority of the wins. Last, Jessica Richards, my 155 pounder gave her best efforts, but her opponents got her every time. Her first guy flipped her like a pancake. She got choked and submitted by each one. She took it like a champ, Police reports The following infor- mation is compiled from Red Bluff Police Department, Tehama County Sheriff’s Department, Corning Police Department and California Highway Patrol. Molestation Police received a report Friday morning indicating a 3-year-old on Walnut Street may be the victim of a sex crime. No further information was available. Next time, she'll be competing at 140 pounds and should have an easier time. Avery Vilche Fitness Buff As for myself, I was chomping at the bit. I wanted to get out there so badly. I was ready- I was under my weight division- (I weigh 130, I could have competed at 140). But my husband, my voice of rea- son, told me that I needed to only compete in my own weight class. He explained that this was my time to coach. So I coached. It was still a rush having 3 of my people bring home the prize for their weight division- con- gratulations Thomas, Jesse and Alex. Great job, Jessica and Mateo. Bill and I were so proud, we must have put dents in each other's backs from patting them so much. I need to mention here that Red Bluff's own Shamus Prusa won the 160 pound division. He submitted one opponent with a rear naked choke, one with an arm bar and lost one match by a decision. Also, he won his mma fight at Win River last Vandalism •A bike was reported knocked over Friday night at the Walmart bike rack. Keep your eye out for this ris- ing star who fights out of Redding Submission. Way to go Shamus! I think that one of the best things that came out of this was that we were able to network with so many other teams. We have a lot of guys that are willing to come train with our people and have invited us to come train with them. I really think I'm going to enjoy these grappling tournaments- I know our team sure did. Everyone is gear- ing up for the next tournament put on by Team Quest in Redding next month. I need to thank Jill Becker who owns Body Projex and allows our fight team to train there- she has a great facility. Of course I need to give one last big thank you to Robert Waelty for the coolest shirts ever. Beastup Fight Wear is going to be bigger than Tapout. E-mail him at info@beastup.com if you want to order a shirt.
