COMMUNITY NEWS COMMUNITY NEWS Methodist University Awarded Grant Methodist University was awarded a Title III grant from the U.S. Depart- ment of Education in the amount of $400,000 per year for fi ve years. “Technology is an integral part of the modern world,” said Dr. Elton Hen- dricks, president of Methodist Univer- sity. “A good 21st century education has to help students feel not only comfort- able with, but also the ability to use the evolving technology creatively. This competitive grant from the Department of Education will enable Methodist Uni- versity students to achieve these goals.” “I am thrilled to learn that Meth- odist has received a fi ve-year, $2 mil- lion grant from the U.S. Department of Education — effective immediately — to upgrade technology on campus,” said Dr. Delmas Crisp, vice president for academic affairs and dean of Meth- odist University. According to Crisp, this grant will help those within Methodist University create a culture of excellence through three inter-related initiatives: • The integration of student data management technology that will engage faculty and staff across divisional and departmental lines and with students for essential, timely academic interventions; • The addition of instructional technology that will enrich the learning experience for all students; and • The incorporation of end-user technology that will empower stu- dents to take control of their learning outcomes and give faculty and staff a robust tool to continue enhancing aca- demic programs and student services. “We plan to integrate state-of-the art technology in our classrooms and within our curriculum,” said Dr. Don Lassiter, vice president for planning and evaluation, and dean of the School of Graduate Studies. “One curriculum that will serve as a model of this new technology integration is the new nurs- ing program.” Lassiter, who will direct the Title III project, added that the initiatives for the next fi ve years fl ow directly from goals set forth in the University’s Strategic Plan and that university personnel will be trained on the use of the new tools. Methodist University is an in- dependent four-year institution of higher education with more than 2,300 students from 41 states and 44 coun- tries. Methodist University offers more than 70 majors and concentrations, three master’s degree programs, and 19 NCAA III intercollegiate sports. Kiser Wins State Library Award Barbara Kiser has been the driv- ing force behind the Friends of the Cumberland County Public Library & Information Center’s book sales for more than 15 years. When she found out she was receiving the 2010 Friends of North Carolina Public Libraries Volunteer of the Year Award, she stated, “I don’t do this for awards. I do this because I love it!” Those who know Kiser recognize that’s true. Only love could drive a person to work as hard as she does to generate income that funds literary pro- grams, including the popular Summer Reading Clubs for all ages, author visits, scholarships for librarians and other enhancements of library services. Kiser bravely carried on her work in an unfi nished storefront space, with con- crete fl oors, no heat or air conditioning and poor lighting during the reconstruc- tion of the Headquarters Library lower level after the fi re of October 2008. She then worked closely with library staff and other Friends volunteers to create a newly designed book sale space. The fi rst sale held there in February 2010 brought in record proceeds. The Friends of North Carolina Public Libraries’ Annual Award Lun- cheon will be held at the High Point Public Library on Saturday, Nov. 6. Refreshments • Door prizes • Vendors and more!
