We Give You Options f Story Telling Festival Slated for Library by BETH SOLZSMAN-CARPENTER If you’re looking for a fun and interactive event for the entire family, mark your calendars for Oct. 22-23 because you won’t want to miss the 2nd Annual Cumberland County Story Telling Festival. This year’s festival will feature Village Surgical Associates Has Been Named An American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence three celebrities from North Carolina, each bringing his or her own unique style of telling stories that will enter- tain and delight au- diences of all ages. In addition, there will be multi-cultural masks on display that were created by local third-grad- ers as part of the Faces in the Com- munity program. According to Sheila Rider, youth services coordinator for the Cumberland County Library, “This year we are doing something different by extend- ing it over two days, with the festival kicking off at 7 p.m. during 4th Friday, on Oct. 22.” The program, that her workshop primarily “focuses on tools used to transfer imagery and more importantly, impart a life lesson while entertaining the listener.” The session is best suited for teens and parents, as well as teach- ers and child-care providers. White is espe- cially well-known for her ability to educate and mes- merize listeners, using both wisdom and humor to do so. Her stories are rich with African, African-American and North Carolina heritage. His use of live birds and puppets, coupled with audience participation, makes for a highly entertaining seg- ment. Birdman Dave’s show will be at 2 p.m. Barbara Armstrong White, noted motivational speaker, business wom- an, tale spinner and owner of UCAN Educational Services, will conduct a workshop entitled, Make the Story Line from 10 a.m. to noon on the library’s second fl oor Story Room. White says that her workshop is “ideal for those who are employed in the areas of child development or child literacy.” She also noted tured story teller hailing from the Tarheel state is singer/songwriter/ recording artist, Timmy Abell. Abell adds music to his stories to enhance the audience’s experience and adds excitement to his special blend of adventure stories, tall tales and fairy tales. He has quite a collection of rare instruments like the bowed psaltery, hammered dulcimer, lap dulcimer and penny whistle. He also performs with his guitar and ban- jo. Abell’s show will begin at 4 p.m. Each of the performers will par- ticipate in a “story telling sampler” beginning at 1 p.m. The sampler will give audience members the op- portunity to hear and observe the differing styles that the story tellers use to get their individual messages across. The samples will be in 15 minute increments. During the week leading up to the festival, Fascinate-U Children’s Museum will feature multi-cultural story times geared toward preschool- aged children. These will be con- ducted at 10 a.m. on Oct. 19- 21 at the museum. The festival is free and open to the public.
