8A – Daily News – Monday, October 11, 2010 Medicare workshop planned Lassen Peak Trail closed PASSAGES Health Insurance Coun- seling & Advocacy Program (HICAP) is presenting their "Medicare and You" workshop 10 a.m. to noon, Sept. 12 at the Red Bluff Senior Center, 1500 S. Jackson St. Registration is required by calling 898-6716. This free workshop is designed for people who are wanting to learn more about the A-B-C-D’s of Medicare or for those who need a "refresher." This is a great time to prepare for open enroll- ment, which begins Nov. 15 and lasts through Dec. 31. Important questions that will be answered include: • When and where should I sign up for Medicare? • Is it automatic? • Do I really need a Medicare pre- scription plan if I continue to work? • What type of plan(s) should I have? • When can I make changes to my coverage? • Do I understand my plan options? • What programs are available to reduce my Medicare health and prescrip- tion costs? • How will Healthcare Reform affect my Medicare Benefits in 2011? People on Medicare will be deluged with information about supplements and other offers as private plans begin their marketing for open enrollment. Before making any decisions, Tatiana Fassieux, Program Manager for the Health Insur- ance Counseling & Advocacy Program (HICAP) warns that people should do their "homework." Signing up with the wrong plan, or not doing anything, may cost Medicare recipients thousands of dollars, and they may not be able to make further changes if certain dead- lines are missed. For information, call HICAP at PAS- SAGES at 1-800-434-0222. If your group or agency would like a workshop, call Natasha Coulter- LaTorre, outreach specialist at 898- 6715. HICAP does not sell or endorse any insurance products. Lassen Volcanic National Park closes Lassen Peak Trail for the season due to weather. This past week saw sus- tained 50 mph winds and the beginning of winter weather. Snow drifts on the peak trail have accu- mulated up to four feet in depth. "The snow caused us to completely shut down trail rehabilitation opera- tions. We will resume trail work as the snow melts in the spring" said Superintendent Darlene M. Koontz. The park Trails Crew and California Conserva- tion Corps began work this summer on the five- year Reach the Peak Trail Rehabilitation Project. Milestones for the project include a project kickoff and opening of the trail in the spring, the successful completion of the largest helicopter transport oper- ation in the park’s history, reconstructing retaining walls, and building a series of steps above the Grandview area. Trails work leader Joe Pettegrew said, "This project is com- plex and hands down, this was the best trail crew I have ever worked with."
