Saturday, October 9, 2010 – Daily News – 5A Religion Faith&Worship Church news Missionaries to speak Inner workings Proverbs 4:23 clearly warns us to, "Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life." Our mind governs our inner workings. What we think about affects every- thing that we say or do. Years ago I was riding in an old Courtesy photo Missionaries Charles and Petra Wirrell will speak at 10:15 a.m. Oct. 24 at the First Baptist Church on 501 Pine St. Charles and Petra have been involved in overseas missions since 2004. Their desire is to “do more” than make a profit and their adventurous spirit led them to enter missions. Initially they worked at a school in Guatemala, cen- tral America, that worked well as their own children finished school. Now that they’re children have finished high school, they plan to work in Sierra Leone, West Africa. With their background in pharmacy and construction they are working to provide clean water through the drilling of wells and public health education when the new wells are established. They are also involved in health care through the refurbishing of a hospital which was damaged and loot- ed during the rebel war. Charles will be involved with construction and maintenance work, while Petra will be involved with caring for the patients at the hospital and educating local people on public health issues. As always they will be working with and training nationals with the view of eventually turning the work over to them. They are about 26 percent short of the goal they need to make this happen. They are under the direction of Global Outreach Mission, Inc. More information is available wirell.com. Evangelism director to speak at Antelope service Pastor John Bohrer of Antelope Home Fellowship invites the community to the Oct. 10 morning worship service to be held at Berrendos Middle School, 401 Chestnut Ave., beginning at 10:45 a.m. The special speaker will be Richard Vierra who is the Multi Ethnic Evangelism director for the California Southern Baptist Convention. Also joining in worship will be the congregation of Union Southern Baptist Church with pastor Robert Wheatley. Bible study for all ages begins at 9:30 a.m. Everyone is invited. school bus from Las Vegas to Carson City, Nevada. It had a governor on it that would not allow it to go over 45 miles per hour. Yes, it was a long ride, but we arrived safely at its end. Even as that bus had a governor to slow it down, we can put governors on our thoughts and actions. There are certain verses in the Bible that will help us govern our thoughts. Ephesians 4:29 is a great one, "Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers." Have you ever wished you hadn’t said something that just slipped out of your mouth? If we thought about this verse before we spoke, it would curtail something that is better left unsaid. God knows every one of our thoughts before we even think it. With that in mind, how is your thought life? Would it please God? Daniel was a man that pleased the Lord. We read in Daniel 6:3 that he had an excellent spirit in him. In Daniel 6:4 it says that after a thorough search, they could find no fault in Daniel. They devised a law to trap Daniel. He was cast into the lions’ den for praying to the one true God. The lions didn’t touch Daniel. When the king called out to him the next morning, he answered, "God has sent His angel and shut the lion’s mouths, so that they have not hurt me, because I was found innocent before Him; and also, O king, I have done no wrong before you" (Daniel 6:22). Our thoughts truly affect our lives. Did you know that not every thought you think is your own? Satan can put thoughts into our minds. If we dialogue with that thought, it will become personal and we take own- ership of it. ted to Him. Isaiah 26:3 says, "You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You." We cannot have true peace apart from Jesus. You can have all your sins forgiven, by accepting Jesus as your personal Savior? Romans 10:13 says, "Whosoever will call upon the name of the Lord will be saved." Every word we speak, Satan’s thoughts are negative, derogatory, demeaning, destructive, etc. Have you ever thought about suicide? Whose thought would that be? Certainly it wouldn’t be from God because He has made us in His image for relationship. Satan hates God’s people and seeks to destroy us from within through thoughts. Since thoughts are so important, how do we control what we think? Philippians 4:6-7 says, "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanks- giving, let our requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus." What a won- derful promise. The Lord gives us peace when our thoughts are submit- ISH NATIONS Rabbi Robert L. Tobin of Congregation Beth Shalom, Overland Park, Kan.: The question presumes that our economic hardships and military conflicts are brought about because of some moral or ethical sin on our part as a nation. God knows, no nation is perfect, and many are corrupt and violent beyond peaceful redemption. But America remains the great force for human dignity, freedom and prosperity in the world. Even so, does God pun- ish and reward any nations in our day? In the last centu- ry, we learned that God did not stop even a Nazi regime that slaughtered innocents by the millions and tried to conquer the world within its reach. No, God is not in the business of punishing nations by force or miracle in our day. Marilyn Adams GodTalk every action we take is first a thought. God has created our minds to honor and glo- rify Him. I love the verse in Psalm 104:34, "May my meditation be sweet to Him; I will be glad in the Lord." Today, I encourage you to take control of your thoughts in every aspect of your life. Don’t dialogue, or roll things around in your mind like the hamster that futilely goes round and round. Forgive those who have hurt you, release the things that you can- not control, refuse to gossip, deter- mine to resolve hidden issues, and live in His peace which is a wonder- ful gift. J.Marilyn Adams is the local author of Freedom From Past Hurts and a minister to women inside and outside of the hospital and prison systems. She ministers healing from her own experience and from the Word of God. VOICES OF FAITH: IS GOD PUNISHING THIS COUNTRY? GOD DOESN'T PUN- What we have learned is that the miracle of divine intervention is dependent upon human action. Our divinely created free will can create the world as it should be. It is our responsi- bility, not God's, to create a world of justice for the widow, the orphan, the stranger, and all of us. DISASTERS ARE NOT SENT BY GOD The Rev. Holly McKissick, pastor of St. Andrew Christian Church, Olathe, Kan.: When a well known Topeka, Kan., min- ister known for anti-gay protests took his "show" to the campus of the Universi- ty of Chicago, the students were ready. They knew he'd show up _ with his children and grandchildren _ holding posters that read: "God hates fags" and "AIDS is the wrath of God." In his distorted faith, every hurri- cane and wildfire, every sol- dier's death and Toyota recall was God's act of vengeance against a nation that has strayed. The students could have returned the preacher's hate by hurling tomatoes and obscenities. Others held posters that read "Jeremiah 29:17" (where God sends sword, famine and pesti- lence to the people, making them like rotten figs). Still others read "Mark 11:14" (where Jesus curses the fig tree). The students were inten- tionally ridiculous, but they made a point: In the Scrip- tures, figs incite more holy wrath and destruction than homosexuals. God isn't a punishing, all powerful despot, and the next disaster won't be sent by God. If this earth is destroyed it will not be God's judgment, but our own.
