4A Daily News – Thursday, September 19, 2013 Pastimes & Arts entertainment Roxie Willet named Artist of the Month Roxie Willett is Red Bluff Art Association's September Artist of the Month. Roxie, an accomplished oil painter, is the association's website manager. RBAA President Kathy Brehm states: "Not only is Roxie accomplished with oils, but recently joined the colored pencil group, 'The Pencil Stubs.' She has produced some beautiful paintings in colored pencil, as well as wonderful graphite drawings. We are so happy to have her in both groups." Roxie says that she took oil painting lessons as a reward for stopping smoking. When she quit "cold turkey," she was determined to use the money that she spent on cigarettes for something fulfilling and that she had always had a desire to pursue. For a period of time she travelled to San Diego to participate in oil painting classes. Living in Fallbrook, California, Roxie wanted a studio closer to home. She opened and ran a gallery in Escondido. Students hung their works and sold them through the gallery. One of the instructors was William Powell who published several books on color mixing, drawing and perspective. Dorothy Kitley also gave oil painting lessons on both canvas and paper. She especially emphasized the importance of creating a range of values from dark to light or vice versa. Dorothy authored several books to be published on painting for Foster Art Books. Roxie relates that these two teachers had a deep impact on her skills as an artist. It was four years later that circumstances forced the sale of the gallery. Roxie took a job in the town's accounting office. At this time, the City Manager of Fallbrook advanced a vision for the town to become an arts center. Fallbrook was a small community surrounded by avocado orchards, marketing itself as the Avocado Capital of the World. It was exciting to see the growth of a full range of art opportunities become reality when the town was able to acquire a building for that purpose. Later, she and her husband retired to Florida. Here Roxie was able to take out her paint brushes again. She says, "Florida is so inspiring, a real artist's paradise." There are scenes everywhere waiting to be transferred to canvas. Roxie and her husband relocated to Red Bluff several years ago. It was her sister Sue Holmes who influenced her to become active in the Art Association. Here she is expanding her horizons to include works in graphite and is becoming involved in Western Art as well. She regularly attends the afternoon drawing classes. In addition, her daughter Denise Eastman, who is a photographer with her own business, "Spit-NImage," posts pictures which often become drawing subjects for Roxie. Roxie shares copies with the subjects after obtaining permission to use their images. Due to the rich western heritage in this area, Roxie would like to pursue more cowboy and related themes. She entered a painting of a bucking bronco in the Western Art Show during the Red Bluff Bull and Gelding Sale. She and her sister spent numerous hours on the mural at the Tehama County Fairgrounds, where they painted a cattle drive scene, which was taken from an original painting by well-known Red Bluff artist Sue Holmes. RBAA, bringing art opportunities, education and enrichment to the North Valley, meets morning and afternoon, Thursdays, at the Tehama County Fairgrounds, 650 Antelope Blvd., Red Bluff.
