Red Bluff Daily News By ANDRE BYIK DN Staff Writer The Red Bluff Spartans football team overcame years of recent losses against its cross-county rival, the Corning Cardinals, last year, beating the Cards 35-0 and capturing the alltime win lead in the Tehama County Shootout. The Spartans travel to Corning at 7:30 p.m. Friday to defend its Shootout trophy and undefeated record. Standing at 2-0 overall after soundly beating Oroville and Anderson, the Spartans will test its impressive scoring output against a team that's allowed just 13 points on the season. The Tehama County Shootout is "always a big deal," Red Bluff coach Corey Hein said. "We got a trophy in our locker room right now," Hein said. "We want to keep it there. It means a lot to them and it means a lot to this community." Hein added that excitement around the game builds among Red Bluff High School and Corning High School alumni. Thursday, September 19, 2013 "It's just an exciting game for everybody and we want to keep getting ready for our (Eastern Athletic League) schedule and this is just another piece of that puzzle," he said. Red Bluff in the early going has found success on the ground and through the air, as starting quarterback Greg Dufour threw two touchdown passes in his 2013 debut against Oroville, and one against Anderson in Week 2. In the backfield, a combination of Christian Shaffer, Mike Stone and Daniel Koenig has diversified the Spartan offense. Against Anderson on Friday, Shaffer scored two touchdowns on the night, Stone notched a touchdown off 52 yards rushing on three carries, and Koenig led all backs with 68 yards on 10 carries. Additionally, Dufour has been a boon on the defensive end, nabbing interceptions in both of Red Bluff's games. Red Bluff leads the Tehama County Shootout record book with 24 wins, 23 losses and one tie. The Cards will be looking to even the score. Page 5 Daily News photo by Andre Byik
