WORLD BRIEFING White House blocked release of spill numbers WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama administration blocked efforts by government scientists to tell the public just how bad the Gulf oil spill could become and committed other missteps that raised questions about its compe- tence and candor during the crisis, according to a commission appointed by the president to investigate the disaster. In documents released Wednes- day, the national oil spill commis- sion’s staff describes ‘‘not an inci- dental public relations problem’’ by the White House in the wake of the April 20 accident. Among other things, the report says, the administration made erro- neous early estimates of the spill’s size, and President Barack Obama’s senior energy adviser went on national TV and mischar- acterized a government analysis by saying it showed most of the oil was ‘‘gone.’’ The analysis actually said it could still be there. ‘‘By initially underestimating the amount of oil flow and then, at the end of the summer, appearing to underestimate the amount of oil remaining in the Gulf, the federal government created the impression that it was either not fully compe- tent to handle the spill or not fully candid with the American people about the scope of the problem,’’ the report says. The administration disputed the commission findings, saying senior government officials ‘‘were clear with the public what the worst-case flow rate could be.’’ Supreme Court debates soldiers’ funerals protests WASHINGTON (AP) — Supreme Court justices, in a rare public display of sympathy, strong- ly suggested Wednesday they would like to rule for a dead Marine’s father against fundamen- talist church members who picket- ed his son’s funeral — but aren’t sure they can. Left unresolved after an hour- long argument that explored the limits of the First Amendment: Does the father’s emotional pain trump the protesters’ free speech rights? The difficulty of the constitu- tional issue was palpable in the courtroom as the justices weighed the case of Albert Snyder. His son died in Iraq in 2006, and members of a family-dominated church in Topeka, Kan., protested at the funeral to express their view that U.S. deaths in Afghanistan and Iraq are God’s punishment for American immorality and toler- ance of homosexuality and abor- tion. Margie Phelps, arguing the case for her family’s Westboro Baptist Church, said the message of the protests at military funerals and elsewhere is, ‘‘Nation, hear this lit- tle church. If you want them to stop dying, stop sinning.’’ Phelps’ argument did not endear her to the justices, who asked repeatedly whether Snyder had any recourse. GOPedge with working-class whites resembles elections wins WASHINGTON (AP) — Working-class whites are favoring Republicans in numbers that paral- lel the GOP tide of 1994 when the party grabbed control of the House after four decades. The increased GOP tilt by these voters, a major hurdle for Democ- rats struggling to keep control of Congress in next month’s elec- tions, reflects a mix of two factors, an Associated Press-GfK poll sug- gests: unhappiness with the Democrats’ stewardship of an ail- ing economy that has hit this group particularly hard, and a persistent discomfort with President Barack Obama. ‘‘They’re pushing the country toward a larger government, toward too many social pro- grams,’’ said Wayne Hollis, 38, of Villa Rica, Ga., who works at a home supply store. The AP-GfK poll shows whites without four-year college degrees preferring GOP House contenders 58 percent to 36 percent. That 22- point bulge is double the edge these voters gave Republican con- gressional candidates in 2006 and 2008, when Democrats won House control and then padded their majority. Ominously for Democrats, it resembles the Republicans’ 21- point advantage with working- class whites in 1994, when the GOP captured the House and Sen- ate in a major rebuke to the Democrats and President Bill Clin- ton. The advantage is about the same as the 18-point margin this group gave Republicans in 2004, when President George W. Bush won re-election and helped give the GOP a modest number of addi- tional House and Senate seats. Israeli prime minister sounding out on possibility of new settlement curbs RAMALLAH, West Bank (AP) — Israel’s prime minister has been sounding out key Cabinet members on extending a freeze on new construction in West Bank set- tlements in hopes of keeping peace talks with the Palestinians alive, but he is encountering stiff resis- tance, Israeli officials said Wednes- day. In Ramallah, key members of the Palestinian leadership — in an increasingly tense waiting mode — expressed optimism that an extension nonetheless was immi- nent. The future of President Barack Obama’s ambitious Mideast peace effort remained uncertain Wednes- day as the U.S. pressed ahead with efforts to broker a compromise over the settlement issue, which has threatened to derail negotia- tions just a month after they were launched at the White House. Israel’s normally talkative leader- ship has been almost completely silent in recent days as Prime Thursday, October 7, 2010 – Daily News – 5B Legal Notices Legal Notices Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wrestled with what appeared to be significant U.S. pressure to agree to some sort of extension of the construction slowdown — which was in effect 10 months and expired on Sept. 26, just weeks after the resumption of peace talks. The Palestinians have threat- ened to walk out of the talks if Israel refuses to reinstate it — and another deadline of sorts has emerged with Friday’s planned summit of the 22-nation Arab League, where the Palestinians expect support for whatever they decide. Gingrich frames election choice MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — For- mer House Speaker Newt Gin- grich is advising Republican can- didates to frame the choice for vot- ers between Democrats as ‘‘the party of food stamps’’ while sell- ing the GOP as ‘‘the party for pay- checks.’’ With a month before the elec- tion, Gingrich brought his brand- ing effort to Minnesota on Wednesday. He raised money for Republican gubernatorial nomi- nee Tom Emmer and the state GOP. Gingrich this week distributed a memo to Republican hopefuls saying they should stress tax and spending cuts as a way to spur job growth while attacking Democrat- ic policies. Gingrich is considering a presidential run in 2012. He says high unemployment has pushed the number of people receiving food stamps to historic highs. He told reporters in Minnesota that Democrats ‘‘are earning the title of the party of food stamps.’’ Legal Notices Legal Notices LEGAL NOTICE NOTICE OF HEARING ON ELEC - TION OF A PERMANENT PLAN Case #J04402 Notice ot Markieth S.
