Local Galleries Highlight Interpretations of Beauty by SONI MARTIN Downtown galleries are doing their part to keep the visual arts alive in Fayetteville. Anyone visiting the area, or artists who are interested in exhibiting their work, should visit the three downtown art venues. Galleries are very different in their mission and purpose, yet they all are ac- tively supporting the need for exhibitions, the arts and local artists. Cultural Expressions, an annual celebration by the Arts Council of Fayetteville/Cumberland County, is a display of art and artifacts from community collectors. Visitors to the gallery will enjoy the exhibit of cultural groups and some individual collections that demonstrate the true diversity in our city. According to Calvin Mims, artist services director at the Arts Council, “the exhibit at the Arts Council beautifully represents the many cultures from around the world that blend in Fayetteville.” Cultural Expressions is an ideal time for visitors to experience the ways different cultures interpret nature, symbols and material. From an Ethiopian cross to the tribal mud cloth from Mali, the exhibit commemorates the way individual cultures ex- press beauty in their object making and their traditional costume. My two favorite objects on display are the Japanese kimono and the Native American leather dress. Both are extraordinary in presentation, detail and bring the art of dress to the exhibit. Each artist brought the essence of plein air painting to the exhibit — inter- preting light across the landscape or cityscape. For various interpretations, each artist picked places in Fayetteville they felt were special. In one of Kennedy’s paint- ings, she selected an impressionistic view of a 4th Friday celebration on Maxwell Street; while Harris is exhibiting an interpretation of the light across a tree lined Hay Street from the viewpoint of the Market House. Visitors to the exhibit don’t have to read the titles to recog- nize the places the artists have painted, from the botanical garden to Linear Park, all the artists have shared their special places in Fayetteville with us. If you have time for one more gallery, then visit Gallery One13 on Gillespie Street to see the Fayetteville Art Guild’s recent competition called Contemporary Compositions. Of the 34 works in the competition, Kathy Flood earned Painting by Gail Harris the fi rst place award with her watercolor titled Tomatillos. Flood creates light in her still life to defi ne the volume of her vegetables; light is also repeated across the surface of the objects to create movement. Flood’s watercolor is a fresh interpretation of nature and simple beauty. Although she earned second place in the competition, the watercolor by Peggy Hartman Carter is another example of a fi rst-place effort. Carter’s watercolor titled Rounded but Elongated is the best of what a watercolor can be when the medium is masterfully handled. If you have time to visit several galleries after leaving Cultural Expressions, then head down the street to the Cape Fear Studios and see their new exhibit Scenes of Fayetteville: a Plein Air Exhibit. I remember seeing artists painting in the downtown area for several days during the summer. At the time, I didn’t realize the artists were preparing for an exhibit. Artists Rose Kennedy, Jaylene Nordgren, Gail Harris, Edwina Clark, Annette Szczekutek, Karen Moore and Sandie McFarlane all weathered the summer heat to create an exhibit fi lled with colorful paintings, pastel drawings and watercolors.
