COMMUNITY NEWS Stormwater Inspectors Complete Water Quality Monitoring Stormwater Inspectors Complete Quarterly Water Quality Monitoring Recently, the City of Fayetteville Stormwater Division collected water samples from streams to monitor water quality in six of the watersheds located within the city limits. Stormwater inspectors collect samples on a quarterly basis and have been doing so since September 2005 as part of the City's NPDES permit. Inspectors take samples in the Cross Creek, Blounts Creek, Beaver Creek, Buckhead Creek and Little Rockfish Creek watersheds. When testing, the inspectors observe air and water temperature, hours since the last rain event, pH of water, turbidity, dissolved oxygen levels, conductivity and flow rate, as well as to report any signs of obvious pollution. Once the inspectors record these observations, water is collected for laboratory testing. The samples are sent to Microbac Laboratories to be analyzed for several water quality indicators, such as total suspended solids, nitrogen, phosphorous, and fecal coliform. These indicators are set by the North Carolina Division of Water Quality (DWQ). Results of these tests are published each year in the City's Annual Stormwater Report to DWQ. The City's Stormwater Division undertakes water quality monitoring activities for several reasons. One reason is so that the City remains compliant with our NPDES MS4 Phase 1 permit. The City also samples to assess the effectiveness of implemented best management practices and improvement in local water quality. It is through water quality monitoring that the City learns if the programs that are put in place are effective. The City also uses the results to compare with results from other large N.C. stormwater program cities looking for similarities and differences. While the Stormwater Division samples on a quarterly basis, the sampling in September coincides with World Water Monitoring Day, which is celebrated on the 18th of each year. World Water Monitoring Day is part of the World Water Monitoring Challenge (WWMC) that runs from March until December. The WWMC is an international educational and outreach program that builds public awareness and involvement in protecting water resources around the world. County Adds Online GIS Data Viewer Cumberland County Information Services has added a GIS Data Viewer to the county's website to expand map viewing options. The improvements were made in response to feedback from the public and will aid citizens using the maps to conduct personal or commercial business. These online features are available at http://gis.co.cumberland.nc.us. The GIS Data Viewer offers county maps that can be viewed through several layers with one click. Any number of layers can be turned on or off. The layers include city limits, utilities, parcels, streets, addresses, contours, buildings, subdivisions, soils and zoning. The GIS Data Viewer has a legend for each layer and tools to measure area and distance. The map shows some public water and sewer lines and provides links to the Cumberland County Tax Assessor's website for each parcel. The new website follows the addition of the Tax Parcel Viewer and the Polling Place Finder to the county's website in February to offer better online GIS map service. For more information, call the GIS division of the Cumberland County Information Services department at 323-6119. Fay Tech Awarded 2014 Military Friendly Schools ® Designation.
