2A – Daily News – Monday, October 4, 2010 Emblem members attend Nashville convention Community 16 years people&events Jeannie Garton, president, and Ginger Mohler, treasurer, represented Red Bluff Emblem club at the 84th annual convention of the Supreme Emblem club of the USA in Nashville. At the memorial service with a "Wings of Love" theme, Garton placed an angel for each of the four club members who passed away during the year. They were Lucille Graham, Genevieve Ward, Past President Joyce Rutala and Charter Member Ida Webster. Donna Del Monico of Vancouver was installed as president. Among her appointments was Garton as installing organist of districts 9 and 11 in California. As one of her final duties as retiring president, Melody Cathey of Huntsville, Ala., proclaimed the week of Sept. 19-25 as National Emblem Club Week. In it, she noted the community service, scholarships, service to veterans and needy, disas- ter relief and other humanitarian work of club members. Locally during the week, the Red Bluff Emblem club served a Tuesday dinner at the Elks Lodge and prepared and served 500 lunches for seniors at the Tehama District Fair. They assisted the Elks Lodge with the official visitation of District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler George Waters of Willows. Their other projects include hospitality at the California State Veterans Cemetery at Igo on Memorial Day and Veterans Day and monthly com- munity blood drives. Their committees are active with the Relay For Life and Junior Round-Up. SECRET WITNESS 529-1268 A program of Tehama County Neighborhood Watch Program, Inc. Setting it straight An article recently regarding the RBUHS Class of 1960 class reunion contained an error. The event begins at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 8. The Daily News regrets the error. –––––––– It is the policy of the Daily News to correct as quickly as possible all errors in fact that have been published in the newspaper. If you feel a factual error has been made in a news story, call the news department at 527-2153. As a 17-year-old, I dropped almost 100 pounds, becoming thin for the first time in my life. By 22, I regained most of it. During that period, I avoided attending meet- ings, which had worked so well, and therefore suffered the conse- quences. Funny, isn’t it? You’ll do everything you can — except the one thing that gets you the results you want. Contrary creatures, we humans can be. Finally returning, I sat in a meet- ing, embarrassed, ashamed, and sad; a thin, middle age woman addressed the assemblage. "My name’s Betty," she said, holding up her "before photo," "I’ve main- tained a 100 pound weight loss for ten years." "One hundred pounds," I thought. "I couldn’t even do that for half that time; no way I’ll make it." It seemed the impossible dream. This week, I am celebrating 16 years at my correct weight, after losing 70 pounds. (I had not regained everything I lost in earlier years; some lessons do stick.) In these 5,844 days since I achieved "goal weight," I’ve learned much. Space doesn’t allow for everything, yet, there’s room for a few observations; provided in the interest of helping others achieve the success I have been for- tunate enough to experience. 1. Losing weight is not linear; it’s four pounds down, two pounds up; losing five, gaining three; dropping one and flat lining for a month. It's up and down with (hopefully) more downs than ups. 2. The internal "battle" about food choices does not cease. Speaking for myself, I merely have become more accustomed to the ongoing drone of the voices jostling for position in my head; now choosing to listen to the positive, healthful ones more often than the others. As for atti- tude: I’ve learned to quiet the inner jerk that wants to berate me for my slip-ups, of which there are still plenty. After all, if shame was motivational, I would never gain a pound. 3. Getting to one's correct weight is not a panacea for all life’s ills. My kids still do things I dis- like. My wife and I still sometimes are at loggerheads. And yes, I con- tinue to be frustrated with the world. But since I'm happier, I han- dle these issues better. 4. Dieting "success" makes one no better a person. Weight does not determine moral value, and I am therefore not superior because of what my scale reflects. I am happi- er — because I beat back a demon that ran my life for too many years, NOT because of what I weigh. Lastly and strangely, Scott Q. Marcus having a weight problem has emerged as my greatest blessing. I used to curse my life, but if not for the work I had to do to change, I might never have developed my love for life, the great relationships I now share, nor would I have had the honor of writing this column. Sure, these might have developed from a different path. But I didn't take — or wasn't given — that option. It doesn't matter; I cannot change what was not. The fact is I am where I am, and more importantly, pleased to be here. That's worth waking up for. About the author: Scott "Q" Marcus is a THINspirational speaker and author. COMMUNITY CLIPS SIRB plans new term The Soroptimist International of Red Bluff celebrat- ed the beginning of the 2010-2012 term of President Vici Miranda with a brunch meeting at the home of Kathleen Rook. The garden served as the setting for the buffet plan- ning meeting of club members. The Chocolate Fantasia and other fundraising activities were discussed along with ways the group can be of assistance to women and girls in the local community. Members brought a number of items needed by the Alternatives to Violence shelter, to assist those who have been victims of domestic violence. ATV and the PATH Sale House represent two of the organizations that are supported by local professional women. The brunch celebrated the conclusion of the two- year term of Past President Jean Shackelford with a scrapbook of memories. These included two very suc- cessful Spring Runs; serving as building guard security for the fair; the Holiday Lights bus tour, sponsored by Mt. Lassen Motor Transit; Chocolate Fantasia and attendance at district and regional conferences. The awarding of numerous scholarships thoughout the last two years is a highlight of the group’s fundraising efforts.
