6A Daily News – Thursday, September 12, 2013 Pastimes & Arts entertainment Composer's Palette concert The North State Symphony begins its 201314 season with Composer's Palette, a concert that is all about color, according to Music Director and Conductor Kyle Wiley Pickett. Performances take place at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21 in Redding's Cascade Theatre and 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 22 in Chico's Laxson Auditorium. The orchestra's performances feature three bright, beautiful and bold pieces of music from Russia, France and Spain. Tchaikovsky's famous "Violin Concerto" will be featured, played by a young and talented Russian-American violinist. "Different kind of sounds affect the listener, just like colors affect someone looking at a painting," said Pickett. "Different 'sound colors' are a big part of what makes a symphony sound special. The many kinds of instruments each have their own sound, and their own color." Yevgeny Kutik, the special guest violin soloist, has been praised by the New York Times for his "rich, sweet tone" as well as by newspapers across Europe. He has played with orchestras from Alaska to the Republic of Montenegro in southeastern Europe. Tchaikovsky's "Violin Concerto" is probably the best-loved and most famous work for violin, with a romantic, expressive style and will feature many feats of technique by the virtuoso soloist. Other works on the NSS' program are by composers Manuel de Falla and Maurice Ravel. The Symphony calls the entire year of concerts "The Art of Music." The Cascade Theatre presents the thrilling production of Yamato: The Drummers of Japan at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16. Yamato offers everything you'd expect from a first-rate Japanese drumming troupe. The wildly entertaining group of mixed-gender drummers applies the theatrical exhibitionism of a rock 'n' roll concert — seasoned with welcome touches of humor — to samurai-serious percussion playing in concerts that captivate audiences of all ages. Described as pure energy meets spiritual high, Yamato performs the centuries old tradition of taiko drumming in a modern production which exemplifies athletic prowess, sleek bodies, and impressive virtuosity. Explosive, hypnotic, rhythmic: this Japanese drum ensemble is a visual and musical treat. For the players of Yamato, every encounter with listeners is a unique and precious experience. Their greatest goal is to send our audiences home after each performance with a new vitality and passion for life. Tickets are $28-$48 and are available at the Cascade Theatre Box Office at 1733 Market St. in Redding, by phone at (530) 243-8877 or directly through the Cascade Theatre website at www.cascadetheatre.org. Symphony will perform work by Simpson professor REDDING — The Juneau Symphony Orchestra in Alaska will perform Symphony No. 2 by Simpson University music professor Dan Pinkston during its 2013-2014 season. The original piece by Pinkston, an award-winning composer, was commissioned by the Shasta Symphony Orchestra for its "Redding's 125th Anniversary Concert" in October 2012. Kyle Wiley Pickett, conductor of the North State Symphony and Juneau Symphony Orchestra, heard the piece during its premiere and decided to take it to Juneau, Pinkston said. It will be performed April 5 and 6 at the Juneau-Douglas High School Auditorium. Symphony No. 2 consists of three movements played without pause and was inspired by Redding's natural landscape. It includes some interesting musical quotations, including folk song, Gregorian chant and popular song. Pinkston's first symphony, Symphony No. 1, premiered in November 2010 at North State Symphony concerts in Chico and Redding. Pinkston, who has taught at Simpson University since 2001, plans to travel to Alaska for the performance.
