Courtesy photo Mike Hill is pictured with Unit Commander John Minton, Adult Leader Jim Bledsoe, and members of the Tehama County Young Marines of the Marine Corps League Detachment 1140, at a recent drill and Drug Demand Reduction training at Ridgeway Park in Red Bluff. Mike Hill gave a presentation of coming out of 30 years of drug use including many stints in prison at a recent Tehama County Young Marines drill and Drug Demand Reduction training. Hill’s honest and caring story, which is the basis for his book enti- tled "The Courage to Change the Things I Can," had an obvious impact on the young people as he warned them of the downside of a life of drug use. Drug Demand Reduction is the focus of the Young Marine Program under the Marine Corps League. The Young Marines receive three hours of DDR training each quarter, and are trained to give presentations at schools and youth meetings as well as Civic organizations. The day also included a tour of the Federal Aviation Administra- tion's Radar facility. A tour inside the large dome was given to 18 Young Marines and two adult lead- ers who learned about the workings of the Radar which is the only one in the North State. The Red Bluff radar base was built in the 1950's as part of the North American Air Defense Command, and was origi- nally an Air Force Station. In 1970, Red Bluff Air Force Station was closed and the 859th Squadron inactivated. Part of the facility was transferred to the Coun- ty and is now known as Ridgeway Park. In 1971, the operations por- tion of the main station was trans- ferred to the FAA who continues to operate the search radar as part of the Joint Surveillance System, a joint U.S. Air Force/FAA air sover- eignty monitoring system. Com- puter screens were demonstrated which track anything in the air for a 200 mile radius. The Young Marines also received a CPR class given by Ruth Ann Rowen, RN. Other activities included PT, Close Order Drilling and Color Guard training. Anyone interested in the Young Marines can contact Tehama Coun- ty Young Marines Unit Comman- der John Minton, USMC Sgt., Retired, at www.tehamacountyy- oungmarines.com or call Regis- tered Adult Leader Annie Bennett at 527-5325 or Young Marine Gun- nery Sgt.
